Ask Roger: Can I lose weight if I don’t exercise?

This week, I’ve chosen this email that I received from Diane in Boise.

“Hi Roger. Thank you for your daily blog posts. I love the daily suggestions and I very much appreciate your “Ask Roger” posts. I love it that you take the time to answer emails.

I have about 75 pounds to lose. I’m thinking that I will call you for your free weight loss consultation. I live in Boise so we would have to meet online.

But I’m wondering what do you recommend for exercise for weight loss? I don’t have a lot of time to exercise and I can’t afford a gym membership and I probably wouldn’t go if I could.

Can I lose weight if I don’t exercise? Also, how do I schedule an online consultation with you?

Can I lose weight if I don’t exercise?

You can lose weight without exercising

Thank you for your question, Diane. And yes, you can lose weight without exercising – but you are making it harder on yourself. There are so many things that I don’t know about you so I don’t know your limitations and possibilities.

I am not a personal trainer or physical therapist, so recommending specific exercises are outside my scope of practice. I recommend to all my clients that before starting a new exercise routine they should consult with their medical doctor or health care specialist.

I’m reminded of a T-shirt that a client gave to me several years ago. You’ve probably seen the TV commercial, “Ask your doctor if astrazeneca is right for you.”

The T-shirt I was given reads, “Ask your doctor if getting off your ass is right for you.” It’s one of my favorite T-shirts that I wear to the gym.

Movement

What I do recommend is movement. Our bodies were created to move. My parents and grandparents fed the cattle, hauled water and wood. They grew and harvested crops and milked the cows. They did not sit at a keyboard, in front of the TV with a remote or live their lives on the freeway stuck in traffic.

Today, my 95 year-old mom lives in her own home by herself. She does leg lifts and gets out of her chair and walks around her house for exercise. She loves going to Walmart and walking from one end of the store to the other. Yes, she uses a walker, but she is moving.

You can lose weight without exercise by eating the right whole plant-based foods. But, you really are making it harder on yourself. You don’t have to join a gym, run a marathon or ride your bike 100 miles. Just get out and move. Take your dog for a walk, walk to your mailbox and back. Join a walking group.

For weight loss, focus more on cardio than muscle building. You do want to be stretching and working your core. Yoga classes are great for this.

So, talk to your doctor and find out what exercise is right for you and then get off the couch and move.
