A diet change helps rheumatoid arthritis, according to Swedish researchers who enrolled 66 arthritis patients in a one-year study, assigning 38 to a gluten-free, vegan diet and 28 to a non-vegan diet. The special vegan diet was meant to eliminate the proteins from milk and grains that appear to cause an immune reaction. Forty percent of people in the vegan group improved compared to just one person in the control group.

In the past, many doctors told arthritis patients that dietary changes would not help them. However, this conclusion was based on older research with diets that included dairy products, oil, poultry, or meat. New research shows that foods may be a more frequent contributor to arthritis than is commonly recognized. It is clear that, at least for some people, a healthier menu is the answer.

A 1989 survey of over one thousand arthritis patients revealed that the foods most commonly believed to worsen the condition were red meat, sugar, fats, salt, caffeine, and nightshade plants (e.g., tomatoes, eggplant). Once the offending food is eliminated completely, improvement usually comes within a few weeks. Dairy foods are one of the principle offenders, and the problem is the dairy protein, rather than the fat, so skim products are as much a problem as whole milk.

Pain-safe foods virtually never contribute to arthritis or other painful conditions. These include:

  1. Brown rice
  2. Cooked or dried fruits: cherries, cranberries, pears, prunes (but not citrus fruits, bananas, peaches or tomatoes)
  3. Cooked green, yellow, and orange vegetables: artichokes, asparagus, broccoli, chard, collards, lettuce, spinach, string beans, summer or winter squash, sweet potatoes, tapioca, and taro (poi)
  4. Water: plain water or carbonated forms, such as Perrier, are fine. Other beverages – even herbal teas – can be triggers.
  5. Condiments: modest amounts of salt, maple syrup, and vanilla extract are usually well-tolerated.

Avoid Major Arthritis Triggers

  1. Dairy products*
  2. Corn
  3. Meats**
  4. Wheat, oats, rye
  5. Eggs
  6. Citrus fruits
  7. Potatoes
  8. Tomatoes
  9. Nuts
  10. Coffee
    *All dairy products should be avoided: skim or whole cow’s milk, goat’s milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.
    **All meats should be avoided: beef, pork, chicken, turkey, fish, etc.

The overall benefits of a healthier diet and weight loss were shown in a recent study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.  Three-hundred and sixteen older, overweight or obese, sedentary men and women with x-ray evidence of knee osteoarthritis were randomly assigned to one of four 18-month treatments: healthy lifestyle control, diet-induced weight loss, exercise, and diet plus exercise.  Those who lost weight due to an improved diet showed a decrease in inflammation measured by a variety of tests.

Who started the rumor that eating fruit is the same as eating refined white sugar? All carbohydrates are not created equally. There are good carbs and bad carbs. Good carbs are sourced by whole, unrefined plant foods, as in fresh fruits, vegetables, grains, and legumes. These are your body’s most efficient fuel; what you ate yesterday will give you today’s energy.

At Slender For Life™ we follow a flexitarian approach to eating where the bulk of your food should look like you dug it out of the ground, picked it off of a plant or bush or out of a tree. Avoid the foods that man has sliced, diced, altered, added words to that you cannot pronounce and put in a package with a label. These are bad carbs.

Weight Loss - Mediterranean Diet: Is It Really Healthy? ~ Hypnosis Health Info

The Mediterranean Diet, widely reported to be a model of healthy eating, is rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, cereals, fish, nuts, olive oil, and a moderate intake of red wine during meals, but is low in red meat, dairy products, and alcohol. 

According to a recent study released in Florence, Italy, on September 12, 2008, people who kept to a full Mediterranean Diet had lower overall mortality as well as lower mortality from several major chronic diseases. Greater adherence to the diet was associated with a 9% lower overall mortality, a 9% lower cardiovascular mortality, a 6% lower incidence of or mortality from cancer, and a 13% lower incidence of Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease, Francesco Sofi, M.D., of the University of Florence, and colleagues reported online in the British Medical Journal.

Many people believe that the olive oil in the Mediterranean Diet is part of what makes it healthy. Wrong! The diet is healthier than the standard American diet because it contains more fruits and vegetables, period. Substituting olive oil for the fats found in most American diets is healthier, but if your object is to avoid heart disease, avoid olive oil.

Believe it or not, your body makes almost all the fats it needs! Two exceptions: linoleic and alphalinoleic fatty acids, amply sourced by a variety of plant foods. Therefore, it serves no purpose whatsoever to add more fat to the ready-made fat. Olive oil is a highly concentrated, refined fat that comes without any nutrition. All added oils, even olive oil, offer one thing: calories. Those calories come with a fat price tag - more fat added to your body!

Hypnosis Decreases Hot Flashes In Breast Cancer Survivors ~ Hypnosis Health Info

Weekly sessions of Hypnotic Relaxation Therapy can decrease the frequency and severity of hot flashes, night sweats and other menopausal symptoms commonly accompanying a breast cancer treatment, findings of a new study suggest.

According to results published in an early online publication in the Journal of Clinical Oncology, hypnosis appears to reduce perceived hot flashes in breast cancer survivors and may have additional benefits such as reduced anxiety and depression, and improved sleep.

As breast cancer survivors are more prone to enter menopause early, hot flashes, night sweats and other conditions can pose a significant problem.

Moreover, as such patients cannot be administered Hormone Replacement Therapy over concerns of cancer re-growth, antidepressants remain the only course of action. However, out of concern over side-effects women opt not to take such drugs.

“This is a very encouraging study of hypnosis as a treatment for hot flashes in breast cancer survivors,” noted Dr. Ted Gansler, Director of Medical Content at the American Cancer Society.

“This is an important topic because of the high prevalence of these symptoms in breast cancer survivors, and because few other treatment options are both safe and effective for this population,” he added.

“There is a real need to study emerging mind-body interactions to treat these ailments because many times medications are not an option,” said study’s lead researcher, Dr. Gary Elkins, professor of psychology and neuroscience at Baylor University.
