New Guidelines Link Lifestyle to
Cancer Survival

Healthy Diet, Regular Exercise Can Improve Odds, Report Confirms

WebMD Health News, April 26, 2012: Cancer survivors who eat right, exercise regularly, and maintain a healthy weight improve their chances of survival, the American Cancer Society says. The Society has long recommended these measures to prevent certain cancers, and officials say the evidence now shows that healthy lifestyle has a direct impact on cancer recurrence and survival.

Nearly 12 million Americans, or 1 in 25 people, are cancer survivors, meaning that they have been diagnosed with the disease at some point in their lives. For some time, proper nutrition and physical activity have been thought to play a role in surviving cancer. But this is the first time the American Cancer Society has issued formal guidelines for survivors. The studies overwhelmingly suggest that eating a mostly plant-based diet, exercising regularly, and avoiding obesity can lower cancer recurrence risk and improve survival.

Studies in breast cancer survivors have shown that a diet high in fruits, vegetables, whole grains is associated with a lower risk of death than one that contains a high intake of processed and red meat, refined grains, sugar, and high-fat dairy products. Eating a healthy diet low in red and processed meat appears to protect against cancer progression, risk of recurrence, and overall survival for a variety of cancers.

Regular exercise appears to be associated with a lower risk for recurrence and improved survival following treatment for breast, prostate, ovarian, and colorectal cancers.

Moderate exercise during cancer treatment has been shown to improve fatigue, anxiety, and self-esteem, as well as heart health and muscle strength.

Cancer survivors who are overweight or obese may benefit from intentional weight loss following treatment.

The report recommends that cancer survivors obtain the nutrients they need from foods instead of supplements, noting that “a concern exists that supplements may do more harm than good” following the diagnosis and treatment of cancer.

It should be no surprise that stress reduction helps patients battle cancer. For the past several years I have had the opportunity to teach stress reduction, mindfulness and self hypnosis skills to many people living with and recovering from cancer. Learning how to be calm and relaxed in stressful situations has been essential for these clients. Having a disease like cancer and dealing with the medical appointments, family, friends, work, insurance, finances, …. can be extremely stressful.

Stress Reduction Helps
Patient Battle Cancer

Cleveland.com, April 23, 2012

Meditation, deep breathing, talk therapy — and anything else that reduces stress, even hypnosis — is a good idea in any high-stress situation. And new evidence reinforces what we’ve been saying for years: You can help defeat cancer if you practice stress management.

The department of psychology and the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami joined forces to prove that a 10-week stress-management program reduces tumor-promoting inflammation. Inflammation not only weakens the immune system and promotes the spread of cancer cells, it aggravates the side effects of treatment and helps fuel anxiety and the blues.

They used cognitive-behavioral therapy to help women deal with the side effects of treatment (physical changes, as well as anger, grief, fear and uncertainty) and targeted early-stage breast cancer patients.

A comprehensive approach to stress reduction sounds like just what you need. Many cancer-support programs also encourage family members to attend counseling. You can find good programs in teaching hospitals, and we’re certain your oncologist and even your general practitioner will give you good advice on where to go.

Women undergoing surgery for breast cancer who received a brief hypnosis session before entering the operating room required less anesthesia and pain medication during surgery, and reported less pain, nausea, fatigue, and discomfort after surgery than women who did not receive hypnosis. The overall cost of surgery was also significantly less for women undergoing hypnosis. [Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Sept. 5, 2007 (J Natl Cancer Inst. 2007 Sep 5;99(17):1304-12. Epub 2007 Aug 28)]

Stress management boosts your immune system and can help recovery from illness and disease. Self hypnosis and other mindfulness techniques help stress reduction. You can <a href="http://hypnosishealthinfo.com/self-hypnosis/"title="learn how to hypnotize" target="_blank">learn how to hypnotize yourself and put hypnosis to work in your life so that you can be more calm and relaxed even in highly stressful situations.

Highest Veg Consumption Linked to 20% Lower Cancer Risk

Dole Nutritional News March 30, 2012: Another reason to load up on veggies: lower risk of thyroid cancer. 60,000 new cases of this deadly disease are diagnosed annually — while a whopping 25 million Americans suffer from various thyroid disorders. Seated right above the collarbone, your thyroid plays a major role in regulating growth, metabolism and reproduction.

Proper thyroid function depends greatly on iodine — deficiency during pregnancy being the most common cause of childhood mental retardation globally. While most Americans get more than enough iodine (thanks to WAY too much iodized salt) we consume far too few vegetables. When Italian researchers looked at two decades of scientific literature, searching for how dietary patterns impact thyroid cancer risk, they found that people with the highest veggie consumption were 20% less likely to develop this particular cancer.

I wish I could do a video in front of the billboard Hot Dogs Cause Butt Cancer, but this will have to do. Next time you are standing in line at Costco or the ballpark for a hotdog, remember that colorectal cancer is one of the leading cancers in the United States, attacking 140,000 Americans every year, with a mortality rate close to 50 percent. According to Dr. Neal Barnard, President of the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine (PCRM), in 2007, the body of research on this disease, including nearly 60 independent studies, was deemed to provide convincing evidence—the highest possible level of scientific evidence—that hot dogs and other processed meats cause colorectal cancer. At Slender For Life™ I promote plant-strong food – food that looks like God made it. I can’t think of any vegetable, whole grain or fruit that looks like a hot dog! Eat plant-based meals.

Hot Dogs Cause Butt Cancer

March 20. 2012, Dr. Neal Barnard: Here are the facts: Colorectal cancer is one of the leading cancers in the United States, attacking 140,000 Americans every year, with a mortality rate close to 50 percent. In 2007, the body of research on this disease, including nearly 60 independent studies, was deemed to provide convincing evidence—the highest possible level of scientific evidence—that hot dogs and other processed meats cause colorectal cancer. Americans eat 20 billion hot dogs a year, as well as significant amounts of bacon, cold cuts, and other processed meats.

Processed meats are a deadly habit. Each daily serving of hot dogs, bacon, cold cuts, and other processed meats increases the risk of dying prematurely by 20 percent, according to a new study from the Harvard School of Public Health. The study emphasized the risk of death from cardiovascular disease and cancer.

Adults have a right to take risks with their own health. But hot dogs and other processed meats are often fed to children, starting a lifelong habit that puts them at serious risk. It’s time to get serious about health and steer clear of unhealthful foods.

As a kid, one of my favorite school lunches was 2 cold hot dogs with Velveeta Cheese between 2 slices of white bread. (Ew. Seriously, that is so gross!) back in the 50′s and ’60′s, we didn’t know any better. Today we do. According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, just one 50-gram serving of processed meat (about the amount in one hot dog) consumed daily increases the risk of colorectal cancer, on average, by 21 percent.

I don’t know about you, but I have never eaten an egg that tasted so good that is was worth increasing my risk of prostrate cancer. Yes, I grew up eating eggs and its only been the last 10 years have I have stopped eating eggs. Self-hypnosis has made it easy to give up eggs, dairy products and animal proteins. Not only do I not want them, they just don’t even look good. If you are wanting to give better care to your body, find out how hypnosis can help you eat for health.

Eggs Linked to Prostrate Cancer

Eating eggs is linked to developing prostate cancer, according to a recent National Institutes of Health-funded study. By consuming 2.5 eggs per week, men increased their risk for advanced prostate cancer by 81 percent, compared with men who averaged less than half an egg per week. Researchers followed 27,607 men who were part of the Health Professionals Follow-Up Study from 1994 to 2008. For men who already had prostate cancer, eating poultry and processed red meat increased the risk for death.

Women undergoing surgery for breast cancer who received a brief hypnosis session before entering the operating room required less anesthesia and pain medication during surgery, and reported less pain, nausea, fatigue, and discomfort after surgery than women who did not receive hypnosis. This afternoon I have the pleasure of speaking to about 50 people (doctors, nurses, staff and patients) at the Harrison Hospital oncology department in Silverdale, WA. It is always an honor for me to be able to share about my experiences teaching hypnosis to cancer patients. People living with cancer can learn hypnosis to improve their quality of life.

Journal of the National Cancer Institute

Studies are showing that hypnosis is a powerful and effective tool in dealing with the physical symptoms of cancer as well as decreasing need for anesthesia during surgery, alleviating pain, nausea, fatigue and emotional distress. Hypnosis is also used to modify the course of the disease process itself through the use of imagery. Studies show that during surgery, hypnotized women required 22% less analgesia and 34% less sedation. After surgery, they reported 53% less pain intensity, 46% less fatigue, 47% less discomfort, and 74% less emotional upset. They also spent 11 fewer minutes in surgery, resulting in a cost savings of almost $800.00 per patient. ~Journal of the National Cancer Institute, Sept. 5, 2007 (J Natl Cancer Inst. 2007 Sep 5;99(17):1304-12. Epub 2007 Aug 28)

A cancer diagnosis is a life-altering blow for anyone. Cancer is often a disease that lasts a long time, and people may be treated for it for many years. Hypnosis can help people with cancer live high-quality lives at every stage of their illness and receive healing in all that they do. According to the Mayo Clinic, “The purpose of Hypnosis as a therapeutic technique is to help you understand and gain more control over your behaviour, emotions or physical well-being”

If you or someone you know has been diagnosed with cancer, give me a call or email me and find out how you can learn hypnosis to for stress reduction, pain management and to improve the overall quality of life through the stages of treatment. If you live too far away, we can design Skype and phone sessions just for you.
