<p>WebMD Health News, March 28, 2012: Losing weight and exercising may help people with type 2 diabetes hold on to their mobility as they age. The good news is that neither lifestyle change requires drastic measures.</p>
<p>The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, shows that losing just a little bit of weight and adding 25 minutes of physical activity a day can help prevent worsening of mobility-related disabilities among people with type 2 diabetes.</p>
<p>Problems with mobility become more common with age. Studies have shown that about 30% of adults over age 50 face some kind of difficulty with everyday activities.</p>
<p>When you look at people with diabetes, that basically doubles. Over 60% of people who have diabetes report some difficulty in their daily activities. Activity limitations include problems like struggling to climb stairs or push a vacuum cleaner, or having trouble bending over to pick up something off the floor.</p>
<p>For every 1% reduction in weight, researchers calculated that people cut their loss-of-mobility risk by 7.3%. For every 1% improvement in fitness, the mobility-related disability risk dropped by 1.4%.</p>

<h2><em>Type-2 Diabetes – the Expected Adaptation to Overnutrition</em></h2>
<p>Type-2 Diabetes was once referred to as “adult-type diabetes” because in the past, this form of diabetes was rare in children. However, over the last two decades, there has been a 10-fold increase in incidence of type-2 diabetes in children, because of the rapidly growing numbers with obesity from an escalating exposure to rich foods, compounded by a lack of exercise.</p>
<p>The malnutrition caused by the high-fat, low-fiber Western diet places serious burdens on the body and requires it to make adaptions in order to survive under adverse conditions. The calories consumed in excess of our needs cause us to gain fat – this is a natural, expected change. Soon a point is reached when this accumulation becomes counterproductive – a point when any further excess body weight is likely to cause serious physical harm. When this hazardous excess is reached, the body puts “the brakes on” in order to slow the rate of gain. This is accomplished by a variety of changes that cause the hormone insulin to become less potent.</p>
<p>In other words, our cells become resistant to the actions of the fatgaining hormone, insulin – a state referred to as “insulin resistance.”</p>
<p>One of insulin’s primary jobs is to push fat into the fat cells – thus saving fat for the day when no food is available (which for Westerners never comes). If it were not for the adaptive mechanisms which allow for the development of “insulin resistance,” people would commonly expand until they became so large that they could not get out of bed or fit through a doorway – a very rare condition that does occur in 1000-pound sized people who need a forklift to move them to the hospital. (They make headlines in the newspaper.)</p>
<p>Multiple studies dating as far back as the 1920s have shown the benefits of a high-carbohydrate, low-fat diet in the treatment of type-2 diabetes. For example, studies from the University of Kentucky Medical School reported as many as two-thirds of diabetics were able to discontinue insulin and almost all stopped oral agents. A recent thorough review of the use of a vegetarian diet in the treatment of type-2 diabetes was published in the September 2003 issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition. In this review article Dr. David Jenkins reported on research showing improvements in blood sugars in diabetics with 39% stopping insulin and 71% stopping diabetic pills after three weeks of therapy. Relief of diabetic neuropathy pains, reduced lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides), and weight loss have also been reported with a low-fat, pure-vegetarian diet. Another recent research paper has reported similar findings with a low-fat vegetarian diet. Many of these people with type-2 diabetes are cured of their disease within three weeks, and most will be cured of their diabetes over time as they adhere to a low-fat, high carbohydrate diet, exercise, and lose all of their excess body fat.</p>

<p>For the most people, type-2 diabetes is in preventable and reversible by stopping eating the foods that made them fat and sick. There are so many misconceptions about potatoes. There is much more to nutritionally packed potatoes than just calories.  They have 2.5 grams of dietary fiber per potato.  That translates into 50 grams for an active man and 37 grams for an active woman.  The average American eats about 10 grams of dietary fiber daily.  Ideally people on a healthy diet would eat 30 to 100 grams of fiber a day.  Potatoes are very high in vitamin C, most B vitamins, potassium and other minerals.  Just as important are the recognized health hazards you are avoiding with potatoes — like sodium, cholesterol, and fat.  Of the calories from potatoes, only 1% comes from fat, and these few fats are mostly the kind that we need, called essential fats. Weight loss hypnosis can help you make the changes to manage your blood sugar and lose weight.</strong></span></p>

<h2><em>How I Reversed My Diabetes Eating Potatoes</em></h2>
<p>In one week on this new way of eating and exercising I was able to kick all of my medications, lose 3 pounds, and begin a journey of self-healing. My total cholesterol dropped from 185 to 124. My fasting blood sugar went from 250 down to 110. I suffered from nightly heartburn that required me to take 3-4 tums a night just to sleep. This was also completely reversed with the elimination of dairy products.</p>
<p>As a type 2 diabetic I was counseled to stay away from potatoes, pasta, rice, wheat and other forms of carbohydrate. What I have learned is that if I choose &#8220;whole&#8221; unprocessed versions of these items and cook them without added fats my body and my blood love me for it!</p>
<p>That being said you will notice that my meals are all centered on starchy foods. They keep me full, give me energy, and quite frankly are so satisfying to my pallet that I never feel deprived. I start each day with hot or cold cereal and hashbrowns. Almost every day I eat hashbrowns. Does that sound like a diet to you? I eat a lot of soup, beans, potatoes, corn, rye bavarian bread, homemade veggie burgers, polenta with greens and beans, enchiladas, tacos, and burritos. The list goes on. I don&#8217;t eat a lot of tofu and soy as it is generally pretty high in fat and calories. I don&#8217;t eat the isolated soy protein products because while most are low in fat they are some of the most industrially processed foods on the market.</p>

<p>A recent study conducted by Ithaca College professor Mary Turner DePalma determined that self-blame plays a role in how patients treat their type 1 or 2 diabetes. The study was conducted by DePalma, Julia Rollison of MANILA Consulting Group, and Matthew Camporese, a PhD candidate at Adelphi University.</p>
<p>&#8220;A great deal of research targets the biological interventions for diabetes,” said Mary Turner DePalma, professor of psychology at Ithaca College. “But far fewer studies examine the psychological factors related to managing the disease. Our study investigated the relationship between judgments of responsibility for disease onset and subsequent health behavior. We hypothesized that increased anger regarding the development of diabetes would be associated with increased self-blame and negative social support and, when coupled with decreased positive social support, would ultimately be associated with the self-report of poorer disease management.”</p>
<p>“Our study shows that interventions designed to improve anger management and increase disease acceptance may offer additional mechanisms to improve diet, exercise and perform appropriate blood glucose testing in individuals with diabetes.”</p>

<p>WebMD, October 31, 2011: There&#8217;s no question about it: If you&#8217;re overweight and have type 2 diabetes, dropping pounds lowers your blood sugar, improves your health, and helps you feel better.</p>
<p>Make no mistake &#8212; you&#8217;re on the right path. &#8220;No matter how heavy you are, you will significantly lower your blood sugar if you lose some weight,&#8221; says Cathy Nonas, MS, RD, a spokeswoman for the American Dietetic Association and a professor at Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York City.</p>
<p>A National Institutes of Health study found that a combination of diet and exercise cuts the risk of developing diabetes by 58%. The study involved people who were overweight (average body mass index of 34) and who had high &#8212; but not yet diabetic &#8212; blood sugar levels.</p>
<p>&#8220;We know it&#8217;s true &#8212; that if someone with diabetes loses 5% to 10% of their weight, they will significantly reduce their blood sugar,&#8221; Nonas tells WebMD.</p>
<p>Even losing 10 or 15 pounds has health benefits, says the American Diabetes Association. It can:</p>

<li>Lower blood sugar</li>
<li>Reduce blood pressure</li>
<li>Improve cholesterol levels</li>
<li>Lighten the stress on hips, knees, ankles, and feet</li>

<p>International Business Times, Wednesday, September 14, 2011: An estimate released by the International Diabetes Federation states that around 366 million people worldwide suffer from diabetes and the numbers are escalating.</p>
<p>According to a report the number of cases is “staggering,” with one person dying of diabetes every seven seconds, or about eight every minute.</p>
<p>The IDF said in a news release that 4.6 million deaths per year are due to diabetes and that spending on the disease has reached $465 billion U.S. per year.</p>
