I figured out last Saturday how to be preemptive with pain management for sports performance. I rode the Cascade Bicycle Club’s Flying Wheels Century ride in preparation for the STP (Seattle to Portland) 204 mile ride on July 9. I have never been concerned about my ability to spin my legs for 100 miles or 204 miles, it was my butt on the saddle that had me concerned. But, thanks to self-hypnosis, I relaxed, I felt good and I rode with the wind. Find out how hypnotherapy can help you prevent pain in sports and in daily life.

In previous long bike rides, my butt would get sore on the saddle. As I have talked about the STP, I have had comments made to me about how I will be feeling the saddle pole in my throat and worse yet was a woman who has ridden the STP both in 1 day and in 2 days said, “Do it in one day. Two days is like giving birth two days in a row!” WOW – that is powerful imagery and powerful negative suggestions! That is not what I wanted on my mind for the next six hours as I rode my bike.

One of the pain control techniques that I have used for years was taught to me by Topher Morrison. The idea is that you imagine holding the part of your body that hurts over your head. When I had a shoulder injury, I imagined my shoulder over my head and the discomfort was gone. A few years ago, Scott Sandland gave me a slightly different twist on this technique. Scott said that when he stubbed his toe cleaning the garage, he imagined leaving his toe in the garage. This twist worked even better for me – just leave the hurting part of my body behind me.

So on June 11, I arrived at Marymoor Park and parked my truck. There were thousands of people busy getting dressed and ready to saddle up. I took a moment for self-hypnosis while sitting in my truck seat. As I did this, the thought crossed my mind that my driver’s seat is very comfortable and that my butt felt very good sitting on it. Then I had an ah-ha moment. I thought to myself, OK butt, you stay right here in the truck today. Rest comfortably all day here on this cushy seat and have a great day.

Throughout the day as I rode, I on occasion had the thought about my butt on the saddle and I would smile and imagine my butt resting comfortably in the truck seat. Not once did my butt hurt all day. It felt good when I crossed the finish line. It felt good when I went out to dinner that night back on the Island with my wife and it felt good the next day when I went for a 20 mile bike ride. It even felt good Monday morning in spin class.

Oh how I wish I would have thought of using this pain management technique preemptively when I ran marathons! I always waited until I was in pain to use it.

So, when you are preparing to do a physical activity that is apt to be painful, use self-hypnosis and imagine leaving the part or parts of yourself that may hurt behind and leave it somewhere where it is relaxed and comfortable. And, of course if you discover a body part is hurting, just imagine that part with the discomfort comfortably somewhere else.

Most athletes and professional sports teams use hypnosis and often have professional hypnotherapists on staff. You can <a href="http://hypnosishealthinfo.com/self-hypnosis/"title="learn-self-hypnosis" target="_blank">learn self-hypnosis here at Hypnosis Health Info and you can receive additional support in my Seattle hypnosis and Bainbridge Island hypnosis offices or via phone and Skype.

I’d love to hear how you have managed pain during sports events so please leave me a comment.

Jack LaLanne’s death on Sunday made me stop and wonder what if we had only listened? I remember him saying in every interview that “if God didn’t make it, man shouldn’t eat it.” As a fat kid growing up, I hated Jack LaLane. I already felt bad enough about me and I sure didn’t need this muscle god making me feel worse. Oh, Jack, I wish I would have listened. Today, my wish is that all people listened to Jack LaLane’s simple message: Eat fresh natural food, get physically active, BE HAPPY! With self-hypnosis, you can stop hanging and sagging. Learn hypnosis and get back to how nature intended us to be.

Jack LaLanne

I found this at Wikipedia: Francois Henri “Jack” LaLanne (September 26, 1914 – January 23, 2011) was an American fitness, exercise, and nutritional expert and motivational speaker who is sometimes called “the godfather of fitness” and the “first fitness superhero.” Until age 15 he craved junk food and had behavioral problems, but he “turned his life around” in 1930 after listening to a public talk by Paul Bragg, a well-known nutrition speaker. During his career he came to believe that “physical culture and nutrition — is the salvation of America.”

“Look at the average American diet: ice cream, butter, cheese, whole milk, all this fat. People don’t realize how much of this stuff you get by the end of the day. High blood pressure is from all this high-fat eating. Do you know how many calories are in butter and cheese and ice cream? Would you get your dog up in the morning for a cup of coffee and a donut? Probably millions of Americans got up this morning with a cup of coffee, a cigarette and a donut. No wonder they are sick and fouled up.”

Read about Jack LaLanne

My life today is very different than when I weighed 110 pounds more than I do now. I am happy. I feel good about me. I am at my healthy ideal weight. I am healthy. I exercise. I eat food that God made.

<a href="http://hypnosishealthinfo.com/self-hypnosis"title="Learn Self-hypnosis ~ The Light Switch Way!" target="_blank">Learn hypnosis and stop hanging and sagging. Use self-hypnosis to motivate yourself to exercise and put a smile on your face.

Jack, thanks for being a health and fitness pioneer.

Mom has begun to realize the importance of exercise. (And I haven’t even taught her self-hypnosis, yet.) Mom’s primary caregiver has been working with her on arm and leg strength, posture, ambulation, standing and sitting. The results of this four times per week exercise routine is that Mom is standing and sitting easier, getting in and out of bed on her own, walking easier and she seems to be happier on the days that she does the most exercise. We took Mom to a Thai restaurant here on the Island Thursday night and I was amazed at how well she did getting in and out of the car and walking with her walker in and out of the restaurant. She even got in and out of the booth on her own.

New Year’s Eve Mom beat me in 2 games of cribbage. On Sunday I manage to beat her in 2 out of 3 games. It’s nice to feel so comfortable with her so that we can chat about old times, long-gone relatives, the Eagle making a fuss outside the kitchen, the squirrel raiding the suet and sitting in silence. Mom is helping herself more around the house – feeling less like a guest and more like she lives here.

New Year’s Day was the first time that Mom had a caregiver from Catholic Charities. None of us were excited about another stranger coming into our home. Mom certainly didn’t like the idea of another stranger helping her with her shower and helping her wash her body. I don’t blame her – I wouldn’t like it either! But, in order to keep her insurance deductible she has to have at least 5 day per week care. We have all said “no thank you” to 7 days.

If you know anything about me you know that I am usually talking about the importance of exercise. I have been astounded at the rapid changes in my Mom as a result of exercise over the past 3 weeks. I never dreamed that she could improve so much, so quickly. Mom has also commented on her improvement and genuinely seems excited. Having said that, Mom usually complains before her caregiver arrives hoping that she won’t have to exercise that day. The caregiver is great, she doesn’t accept no as an answer. When Mom tells her she is tired or sore, the caregiver says “That’s great. That is what we are working towards,” and then has Mom continue on. I realize that Mom is like most of us. We whine and make excuses about exercise and try to get out of it, yet when we do it we feel so much better.

Monday morning in my 5:30 AM spin class I was thinking about how I used self-hypnosis to motivate myself to get out of my warm bed and out into the cold to make it to class and I got to thinking that Mom should learn hypnosis. Mom has experienced hypnosis previously and she listens to <a href="http://hypnosishealthinfo.com/stress/orange-blossom"title="Orange Blossom" target="_blank">Orange Blossom regularly. Mom also listens to pain management hypnosis CDs that were created by both Scott Sandland and myself. So I know that she is open and receptive to hypnosis. By teaching Mom self-hypnosis, she will have a tool to help her with motivation to exercise, manage her pain and to change her eating habits.

At age 88 Mom is rapidly gaining balance, strength and mobility from exercise. Imagine what more may be possible for her when she learns hypnosis!

Monday afternoon we took her to Home Depot to start the process of looking for new carpeting, new light fixtures and paint. We left with more questions than answers, but at least we knew the questions we needed to ask the insurance company. Then it was to Costco for her hearing exam. The woman who did the testing was great with her. Mom liked the looks, feel and sound of one pair of hearing aids. She had some difficulty adjusting the volume because of her long finger nails. When the woman suggested she have shorter nails I giggled because I knew that would not happen. Mom made it clear to her that she would learn to do it with her nails at this length. Mom needs to have her ears cleaned before continuing with the hearing exam. It appears that it is cheaper to buy the hearing aids at Costco without insurance than it is to go to an approved provider for the same hearing aids and get $300.00 from the insurance coverage.

Our insurance stress came on Tuesday when the hospital called concerned about one of Mom’s ER visits and payment from the insurance company. Several calls to the insurance company we learned that the insurance would not cover any medical expense outside of Colorado unless it was in the Emergency Room. They actually went so far as to say that she should cancel her appointment to have her ears cleaned and go to the ER and have them do it. The insurance company acknowledged that her fire ER visit cost $6000.00 and they would pay that to clean her ears and deny a visit to a clinic that accepted their insurance but was outside her service area of Colorado. (This will be another post.) Man, do we need health care reform or what?!

Is one of your New Year’s resolutions to exercise? Don’t let yourself become weak and immobile. No matter how old you are you can benefit from exercise. <a href="http://hypnosishealthinfo.com/self-hypnosis/selfhypnosis"title="Light-Switch-Self-hypnosis" target="_blank">Learn hypnosis and discover the power that you have over your thoughts, emotions and behaviors. Put an end to your negative self-talk, your limiting beliefs and any excuses you have that keep you from exercise. No matter how old you are, hypnotherapy can help get you moving.

A new study shows that 150 minutes per week of intense exercise can improve blood sugar and insulin levels. This is my third post this week about the importance of exercise. I am particularly focused on the health benefits of exercise right now because I have seen in my own family the devastating effects of no exercise. Self-hypnosis can help motivate you to care enough about yourself you get off the couch and move your body. Hypnosis for weight loss can also help improve your desire and ability to exercise as well as help your healing of Type 2 Diabetes.

Exercise Crucial for Patients With Type 2 Diabetes

WebMD Health News, December 10, 2010: New guidelines call for people with type 2 diabetes to get at least 150 minutes of moderate-to-vigorous aerobic exercise over the course of at least three days during the week, and not to skip more than two days of exercising.

Strength training, using weights to develop muscle mass, is also important in diabetes management. Resistance training should be part of a diabetes patient’s exercise regimen, according to the new guidelines, which are published in the December issue of Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise.

Exercise is critical to reducing the risk of diabetes, as well as helping people with diabetes improve insulin and blood sugar production. Exercise may also improve a diabetes patient’s lipid profile, such as lowering the levels of cholesterol and other fats in the blood, and also lead to losing weight.

I know that when I weighed 110 pounds more than I do now, I felt like this couple on the right. The last thing that I wanted to do was to exercise. Hypnosis changed all that! Thanks to self-hypnosis, it is easy for me to stay motivated to exercise. I love hearing stories from Slender For Life™ clients who went from hating exercise to making it a natural part of everyday thanks to hypnotherapy.

Exercising When You’re Overweight

From WebMD:

Easy Does It
People should embark on a fitness program gradually because they may have underlying health issues such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or be prone to shortness of breath, dizziness, nausea, and overheating. You can gradually work up to elliptical trainers. The key is to not sign up for a boot camp workout like on television’s The Biggest Loser because that may be too much, too soon.

It’s best to get to the point where you can exercise 30 minutes comfortably three or four times a week before progressing to something more intense. It’s OK to break things up. If you can’t exercise 30 minutes at one time, aim for three 10-minute segments.

Dos and Don’ts
Ready to get started?

Get fitted with good shoes. For instance, running store staff can analyze your gait and make recommendations. “The support makes all the difference.”

Wear comfortable clothing. Chafing is common in the leg and groin area. Shorts and a T-shirt are fine in the pool if you’re self-conscious or can’t find a suit.

Include strength training eventually. But to lose weight, focus on aerobic training in the beginning.

Consider a monitoring system to track weight, what you eat, and exercise. Many smart phones have applications or you can use online systems. Pedometers are helpful to get you moving.

But:

Don’t do high-impact exercise in the beginning. It’s fine to build up to, but jumping in with both feet landing on a hard surface “is usually going to hurt something.”

Don’t compare yourself to others in your class or gym or let feelings of self-consciousness overwhelm you.

Don’t be impatient. Don’t look for radical change in a short time or get fixated on big weight loss results like on The Biggest Loser. Although such shows can be motivating, they don’t help set realistic expectations. “You see people who lose two pounds in one week and they’re crying.”

The key is to “be consistent and do something. There are too many people out there making excuses about why they can’t exercise.”

Hypnotherapy can help you get off your duff and exercise. In fact, I use self-hypnosis every time I exercise. I use hypnosis in spin class and in between sets when I’m using free-weights and machines. Self-hypnosis not only motivates me to exercise it helps me with form and strength and intensity.

I guess that it’s no surprise that physically fit people have a reduced risk of colds. I have noticed at the gym that those who are most regular, seldom miss working out due to illness. I rarely get sick. Its been years since I had the flu (no flu shots) and seldom do I get a head cold. I used to get upper respiratory infections and stomach flu several times a year. Thanks to self-hypnosis, I eat healthy and I exercise. I also use hypnosis to boost my immune system. You too can learn how to hypnotize yourself for your health and wellness.

Upper Respiratory Tract Infection Is Reduced In Physically Fit and Active Adults

WebMD Health News, Nov. 1, 2010. People who are physically fit and active catch fewer colds, and the colds they do get are milder. The most significant finding of the study was that people who were physically fit and who engaged in exercise five or more days per week were about half as likely to suffer cold symptoms compared to participants who reported less physical activity.

What is more, researchers say the severity of symptoms fell by 41% among those who felt fittest and by 31% among the most physically active. Exercising sparks a temporary rise in immune system cells, though the number drops within a few hours.

Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired? Take a look at your lifestyle. How much are you exercising? What are you eating? What is your mental and emotional health? If you are ready to do what you can do to improve your health and reduce your chances of upper respiratory tract infections, <a href="http://hypnosishealthinfo.com/self-hypnosis/selfhypnosis"title="Light-Switch-Self-hypnosis" target="_blank">learn how to hypnotize yourself for health and wellness.
