<span style="color: #006666;"><strong>What do sleeping pills and cigarettes have to do with each other? I new study finds that people who take prescription sleeping pills, even once in a while, have a higher death risk than non-users. Over the years I have been surprised at the casualness I hear from people about their prescription sleeping pills use. I have heard on several occasions from people who were going on a red-eye flight that they went to their MD and got a prescription for sleeping pills. I have never understood why anyone would do that to their body when there are healthy alternatives available. In my Seattle hypnosis and Bainbridge Island hypnosis offices and via Skype, I teach clients clients self-hypnosis and other relaxation techniques and other tools specifically for ease of going to sleep. <h2><em>Sleeping Pills Called &#8216;as Risky as Cigarettes&#8217;</em></h2>
<p>WebMD Health News, February 27, 2012: The top third of sleeping-pill users had a 5.3-fold higher death risk. They also had a 35% higher risk of cancer, the study found. &#8220;We are not certain. But it looks like sleeping pills could be as risky as smoking cigarettes. It looks much more dangerous to take these pills than to treat insomnia another way,&#8221; study leader Daniel F. Kripke, MD, tells WebMD.</p>
<p>The sleeping pills in question are known as hypnotics. They include newer drugs such as zolpidem (the best known brand name is Ambien) as well as older drugs such as temazepam (the best known brand name is Restoril). Hypnotic sleeping pills actually cause a person to fall asleep. This sets them apart from other sleeping aids, such as the supplement melatonin, which promote sleep through relaxation.</p>
<p>Over an average of 2.5 years, the death rate for those who did not use sleeping pills was 1.2%. It was 6.1% for people with sleeping pill prescriptions. Even those prescribed 18 or fewer sleeping pills a year had a 3.6-fold higher death risk. Based on these findings, Kripke and colleagues estimate that sleeping pills are linked to 320,000 to 507,000 U.S. deaths each year.</p>
<p>&#8220;We think these sleeping pills are very dangerous. We think they cause death. We think they cause cancers,&#8221; Kripke says. &#8220;It is possible but not proven that reducing the use of these pills would lower the U.S. death rate.&#8221; Hypnotic sleeping pills affect the quality of sleep. When used too often, he says, &#8220;people don&#8217;t feel as restored after sleeping with them.&#8221; He also points out that many hypnotic sleeping pills are habit forming. &#8220;For those at risk of addiction, or with other addictions, they can be dangerous,&#8221; he says. &#8220;And most of these drugs increase the effects of alcohol.&#8221;</p>
<p>It may sound surprising, but sleeping pills are not the best way to treat insomnia. The drugs clearly help people with short-term trouble getting to sleep. But for most insomnia sufferers, they are not the answer.</p>

<p>From WebMD Health News Nov. 12, 2010: Millions of Americans say they’re not getting enough sleep and that the lack of shut-eye affects their personal relationships, job performance, and mental and physical health, according to a new study.</p>
<p>A global survey of more than 30,000 people in 23 countries commissioned by the Philips Center for Health and Well-Being shows that people in the U.S. have one of the highest rates of sleep deprivation. The survey finds that 37% of Americans feel they don’t get enough sleep. Only France at 45% and Taiwan at 50% had higher incidences of sleep deprivation.</p>
<p>What’s Keeping Us From Sleeping? 49% of Americans who don’t get enough sleep blame stress and worry. And Americans realize that not getting enough sleep affects their lives.</p>

<p><em>ScienceDaily</em> (Sep. 28, 2009) — More than 12 million people in the U.S. suffer from<strong> sleep apnea</strong>, most common among the <strong>overweight</strong> and <strong>obese</strong>. More than just loud snoring, it can lead to <strong>high blood pressure</strong>, <strong>stroke</strong>, <strong>cardiovascular disease</strong> and a poor quality of life. For years, doctors have told patients with<strong> sleep apnea</strong> that their best bet for alleviating it would be to <strong>lose weight</strong>, but there&#8217;s been very little research-based evidence to prove that.</p>
<p>Foster and colleagues from six other universities recently completed the largest randomized study on the effects of <strong>weight loss</strong> on <strong>sleep apnea</strong> in patients with<strong> type 2 diabetes</strong>. They found that among patients with severe <strong>sleep apnea</strong>, those who lost the recommended <strong>weight</strong> were three times more likely to nearly eliminate the number of <strong>sleep apnea</strong> episodes compared to those who did not <strong>lose weight</strong>. The results are published in the Sept. 28 issue of the <em>Archives of Internal Medicine</em>.</p>
<p>The new study, called <em>Sleep AHEAD</em>, looked at 264 <strong>obese</strong> patients with<strong> type 2 diabetes</strong> already enrolled in the Look AHEAD trial, an ongoing 16-site study investigating the long-term health impact of an intensive lifestyle intervention in 5,145 <strong>overweight</strong> or <strong>obese</strong> adults with <strong>type 2 diabetes</strong>. Participants were between 45 and 75 years old.</p>
<p>The 264 participants were broken into two randomized groups: the first received a group behavioral <strong>weight loss</strong> program developed especially for <strong>obese</strong> patients with <strong>type 2 diabetes</strong>, portion-controlled diets, and a prescribed exercise regimen of 175 minutes per week. The second attended three group informational sessions over a one-year period that focused on diabetes management through <strong>diet</strong>, physical activity and social support.</p>
<p>After one year, members of the first group lost an average of 24 pounds. More than three times as many participants in this group had complete remission of their<strong> sleep apnea</strong> (13.6 percent compared to 3.5 percent), and also had about half the instances of severe <strong>sleep apnea</strong> as the second group. Further, participants in the second group only lost about a pound, and saw significant worsening of their <strong>sleep apnea</strong>, which suggested to Foster and his team that without treatment, the disorder can progress rapidly.</p>

<p><em>Last Thursday when I was in I purchased<strong> Sleep, Sleep, Sleep</strong> from you.  You may recall that for years I have had difficulty falling asleep and when I did it was restless sleep. I always woke up in the morning tired and exhausted. </em></p>
