Hypnosis and Cancer Treatment
Last month OncologyNurseAdvisor had an excellent article that discussed hypnosis and cancer treatment. The article correctly states that “Hypnosis has, over time and across many instances, been shown to improve both clinical and cost outcomes connected to cancer treatment.”
As a Health Care Support Hypnotherapist I have witnessed the benefits of the combination of hypnosis and cancer treatment. For the past 20 years I have supported people living with cancer with hypnosis therapy. I am support team member at Peninsula Cancer Center and a frequent speaker at Cancer Pathways (Gilda’s Club) and other local cancer support groups.
I receive calls from people in all stages of cancer. Sometimes it’s as soon as they get a diagnosis to deal with the stress, anxiety and trauma of the diagnosis. Other times its part way into chemo or radiation to manage side effects and pain. People have scheduled with me prior to surgery and others have scheduled after they have completed treatment to navigate reentry into their life. And, for some people, our work is a part of end-of-life-care.
Frequently, people with a cancer diagnosis invite their partner, family members or caregivers to be included in our sessions. This is a wonderful opportunity for safe, honest and open conversation.

Hypnosis and Its Use in Cancer Treatment
Hypnotherapy and Cancer
Patients with cancer frequently experience pain, sickness, nausea, and for women with breast cancer, hot flashes, loss of self-esteem, and fear of surgery. These and other benefits have been researched and presented to the medical community:
- Reduced pain and stress associated with the cancer itself.
- A decrease in the after-effects of chemotherapy and radiation treatments
- Improved mental state with less stress, less anxiety, and the feeling of a greater control and acceptance of the situation
- Better postsurgical response measured as decrease in pain requiring less medication, less tiredness, and a faster healing from the surgery itself
Patients who undergo hypnosis before surgery or before chemotherapy or radiation therapy generally heal faster, experience less pain and therefore need less pain medication, and are less anxious about their situation.
Patients with cancer can use hypnosis to activate and trigger their immune system and aid their body in fighting the disease. Patients are often given instructions on using guided imagery to visualize their immune system working with their treatment to defeat the disease and eliminate toxins from their body.
