Here is a nutrition lesson for you: Protein is NOT a food group. I know, everyone calls beef, pork, fish and poultry “protein.” Yes, they contain the protein nutrient – but then so do peas, potatoes, lettuce and other vegetables and fruit. But have you ever vegetables and fruit referred to as a protein?

Protein is not a synonym for meat. Protein is a nutrient.

Why is this important? Americans have become obsessed with protein. I frequently hear people talking about making sure that they get enough protein. Again I ask, who do you know that has a protein deficiency? (Probably no one.) The health crisis here in America is too much protein.
