<p>VegSource April 25, 2011: The rise of obesity is usually blamed on too much eating and not enough exercising, but Robert Lustig, MD, a UC San Francisco pediatric neuroendocrinologist, asks us to look beyond the obvious. Yes, more Americans are overweight today than 30 years ago. Kids are still getting heavier, compared with prior generations of kids.  But behaviors that some might refer to as gluttony and sloth are merely consequences of the true cause of the epidemic, Lustig says. Food was just as abundant before obesity’s ascendance. The problem is the increase in sugar consumption. Sugar both drives fat storage and makes the brain think it is hungry, setting up a “vicious cycle,” according to Lustig.</p>
<p>More specifically, it is fructose that is harmful, according to Lustig. Fructose is a component of the two most popular sugars. One is table sugar — sucrose. The other is high-fructose corn syrup. High-fructose corn syrup has become ubiquitous in soft drinks and many other processed foods.</p>
<p>Lustig believes that fructose generates greater insulin resistance than other foodstuffs, and that fructose calories, therefore, fail to blunt appetite in the same way as other foods. Unlike conventional calorie counters, Lustig does not believe all food calories have the same impact on fat storage and energy expenditure, regardless of whether they come from fat, protein or carbohydrate. Fructose, a type of carbohydrate, is not metabolized like other foodstuffs, and not even like glucose, the other major carbohydrate, Lustig says.</p>
<p>In addition, Lustig claims that fructose is just as bad as alcohol in causing fat storage in the liver — and in causing fatty liver disease. Much of processed food labeled “reduced fat” instead has sugar added to make it more palatable, Lustig says. But when it comes to harmful health effects, sugar is worse than fat, he claims. Consumption of either results in elevated levels of artery-clogging fats being made by the liver and deposited in the bloodstream. But fructose causes even further damage to the liver and to structural proteins of the body while fomenting excessive caloric consumption, Lustig says.</p>
<p>Lustig prescribes four simple guidelines for parents coping with kids who are too heavy:</p>
<ul>
<li>Get rid of every sugared liquid in the house. Kids should drink only water and non-dairy &#8220;milks&#8221;.</li>
<li>Provide carbohydrates associated with fiber.</li>
<li>Wait 20 minutes before serving second portions.</li>
<li>Have kids buy their “screen time” minute-for-minute with physical activity.</li>

Of course that caught my attention and I had to check it out. Much to my delight was this letter that describes many of the stories that I have heard over the years from Slender For Life™ weight loss hypnosis clients. If fact, it reminds me of my own relationship that I once had with cinnamon rolls. Thanks to hypnosis for weight loss, I have ended my own unhealthy relationship with food that made me fat. Now, I love to snack on vegetables and fruit.</strong></span></p>
<blockquote><p>Dear Donut,</p>
<p>Our relationship goes back a long way.  I feel like you’ve become a big part of me.  You used to be such a treat, but now, I fear you’ve become a bad habit.  Three-thirty in the afternoon rolls around and suddenly you’re there, demanding my attention.  It wasn’t supposed to be this way.</p>
<p>I don’t know how to say this without hurting your feelings, but let’s face it.  You lied to me.  You were supposed to be a snack, a burst of energy, a friend to carry me through until dinner.  But that’s not what happened.  Sure, the anticipation of meeting you was exquisite.  Your softness against my lips.  Your sweet taste&#8230;</p>
<p>But I digress.  The sad thing was that after all that foreplay, you didn’t hold up your end of the bargain.  After you were gone, I felt tired, not energized.  In fact, worse than if I hadn’t had you at all.  I put up with it for a while, but it has gone too far.  This relationship has to end.</p>
<p>I’m sorry if I’ve never mentioned this before.  I know you mean well.  I appreciate the kind thought, but no, I really don’t think there’s anything you can do.  No, another layer of frosting isn’t going to make a difference.  Really.  Yes, a fruit filling might make you more romantic, but that just doesn’t deal with the issue.  We just weren’t made for each other.</p>
<p>Well, I wasn’t going to mention this to you, but yes, there is someone else.  She’s from a different country.  No, not Danish!  She goes down smooth and gives me lasting energy.  No, this isn’t about liking salty more than sweet.  Besides, she’s a lot less salty now, more earthy, I’d say.  She’s a vegetable juice.</p>
<p>No need to get personal!  Vegetables may not be sexy, but they’re smart, and I have come to appreciate how much I like that.  You know, I thought you would be a difficult habit to give up, but it turned out that you were easy to replace with something smart.</p>
<p>Look, let’s not part as enemies.  You’re sweet.  You’re fun, particularly when you’re fresh.  And we have known each other a long time.  Can&#8217;t we just be friends?</p>

I was so excited when expectant mom came to my Slender For Life™ office for a free hypnosis for weight loss consultation. She is pregnant and obese and knows that for her health and for the health of her baby she needs to lose weight during the pregnancy. <p>February 8, 2011, Press Association: Diets high in fats, sugars and processed foods are lowering toddlers&#8217; IQs, a new study has suggested.  It found eating habits among three-year-olds shape brain performance as they get older. A predominantly processed food diet at the age of three is directly associated with a lower IQ at the age of eight and a half.</p>
<p>Food packed with vitamins and nutrients notably did the opposite, helping boost mental performance as youngsters got older, the Journal of Epidemiology and Community Health reports.</p>
<p>Researchers said toddlers&#8217; diets could change IQ levels later in childhood, even if eating habits improve with age. &#8220;This suggests that any cognitive/behavioral effects relating to eating habits in early childhood may well persist into later childhood, despite any subsequent changes to dietary intake,&#8221; the authors wrote.</p>
<p>The brain grows at its fastest rate during the first three years of life. &#8220;It is possible that good nutrition during this period may encourage optimal brain growth,&#8221; the report added.</p>

<p>Stiffness in blood vessels can be seen even in young children who are obese. The study revealed that the elastic qualities of aortas in obese children are abnormal. The results of the study are alarming because blood vessels in children should not be showing signs of hardening.</p>
<p>Our kids are at risk. Poor nutrition and inactivity are threatening their health and well-being.</p>
