<p>VegSource April 25, 2011: The rise of obesity is usually blamed on too much eating and not enough exercising, but Robert Lustig, MD, a UC San Francisco pediatric neuroendocrinologist, asks us to look beyond the obvious. Yes, more Americans are overweight today than 30 years ago. Kids are still getting heavier, compared with prior generations of kids.  But behaviors that some might refer to as gluttony and sloth are merely consequences of the true cause of the epidemic, Lustig says. Food was just as abundant before obesity’s ascendance. The problem is the increase in sugar consumption. Sugar both drives fat storage and makes the brain think it is hungry, setting up a “vicious cycle,” according to Lustig.</p>
<p>More specifically, it is fructose that is harmful, according to Lustig. Fructose is a component of the two most popular sugars. One is table sugar — sucrose. The other is high-fructose corn syrup. High-fructose corn syrup has become ubiquitous in soft drinks and many other processed foods.</p>
<p>Lustig believes that fructose generates greater insulin resistance than other foodstuffs, and that fructose calories, therefore, fail to blunt appetite in the same way as other foods. Unlike conventional calorie counters, Lustig does not believe all food calories have the same impact on fat storage and energy expenditure, regardless of whether they come from fat, protein or carbohydrate. Fructose, a type of carbohydrate, is not metabolized like other foodstuffs, and not even like glucose, the other major carbohydrate, Lustig says.</p>
<p>In addition, Lustig claims that fructose is just as bad as alcohol in causing fat storage in the liver — and in causing fatty liver disease. Much of processed food labeled “reduced fat” instead has sugar added to make it more palatable, Lustig says. But when it comes to harmful health effects, sugar is worse than fat, he claims. Consumption of either results in elevated levels of artery-clogging fats being made by the liver and deposited in the bloodstream. But fructose causes even further damage to the liver and to structural proteins of the body while fomenting excessive caloric consumption, Lustig says.</p>
<p>Lustig prescribes four simple guidelines for parents coping with kids who are too heavy:</p>
<ul>
<li>Get rid of every sugared liquid in the house. Kids should drink only water and non-dairy &#8220;milks&#8221;.</li>
<li>Provide carbohydrates associated with fiber.</li>
<li>Wait 20 minutes before serving second portions.</li>
<li>Have kids buy their “screen time” minute-for-minute with physical activity.</li>

<p>WebMD, May 2, 2011: Carrying around extra pounds during middle age was associated with a higher risk of Alzheimer&#8217;s disease later in life. The findings, published in the journal Neurology, suggest that control of body fat as early as middle life is important to prevent dementia later in life.</p>
<p>Close to one in three of the participants were overweight or obese in middle age. And those that were had about an 80 percent higher chance of getting any kind of dementia than people of normal weight. The more participants weighed in mid-life, the higher their chance of getting dementia or &#8220;questionable dementia&#8221; &#8211; meaning they had signs of thinking and reasoning problems, but not enough to be diagnosed with dementia.</p>
<p>Extra weight has been shown to increase a person&#8217;s risk for diabetes and heart and blood vessel diseases &#8211; and those conditions are related to a higher dementia risk. However, the link between weight and dementia remained even after the researchers took other diseases into account.</p>
<p>The findings are the latest evidence that preventing Alzheimer&#8217;s disease and dementia starts long before their signs and symptoms typically show up. People need to understand that what they do today could have an effect on them 30 or 40 years from now. When it comes to maintaining a healthy weight what&#8217;s good for the heart is good for the brain.</p>

<p>Reuters, February 3, 2011: Now that obesity is spilling into poorer nations, more than half a billion people, or one in 10 adults worldwide, are obese. That&#8217;s more than double the number in 1980. And while rich nations made big strides in cutting rates of high cholesterol and hypertension, or high blood pressure, the overall number of people with high blood pressure rose from 600 million in 1980 to nearly 1 billion in 2008, fueled by an aging and expanding global population.</p>
<p>Overweight and obesity, high blood pressure and high cholesterol are no longer Western problems or problems of wealthy nations.</p>
<p>The world is getting more and more overweight and obese. Being overweight or obese raises the risk of heart disease, diabetes, some cancers and arthritis. Hypertension, another key risk factor for heart disease, is the world&#8217;s biggest killer. Obesity-related diseases account for nearly 10 percent of U.S. medical spending or an estimated $147 billion a year. <p>Reuters Health, January 25 2011: Losing weight is often touted as a way to improve health, but many weight-loss programs may not help stave off disease since people tend to gain the weight back. People lost an average of 8 to 12 pounds on the diets and kept the weight off for an average of 6 months. But the pounds slowly crept back on, and after less than 6 years, the dieters were back where they started &#8212; negating any improvement in health from the weight loss.</p>
<p>In the US, 73 percent of adults are overweight or obese, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Financially speaking, the Australian study shows a dieter who also exercises would save an average of $1,088, and someone in the low-fat diet program would save about $1,040 in health care costs.</p>

<p>From Reuters Health on September 21, 2010. While just 13 percent of adults were obese in the early 1960s, more than 30 percent were by 1999. In 1999-2000, the researchers found, 27 percent of men were obese and 39 had abdominal obesity. By 2007-2008, those percentages had risen to 32 percent and 44 percent, respectively. The number of obese women inched up from 33 percent to 35 percent over the same time period, while abdominal obesity prevalence rose from 56 percent to 62 percent.</p>
<p>American would either need to consume 500 fewer calories a day, walk for nearly two additional hours a day, or burn off the equivalent amount of calories doing some other type of physical activity.</p>
