Dump it and all the ones in the fridge and in the garage down the drain. In their book “Prescription for Nutritional Healing,” James and Phyllis Balch lists aspartame under the category of “chemical poison.” Research shows that artificial sweeteners can stimulate your appetite, increase carbohydrate cravings, stimulate fat storage and weight gain and may actually double your risk of obesity! I remember when I carried that extra 100 pounds I would down a can of Diet Coke while I waited for the coffee to brew. By the end of the day, I would have finished off at least a 6 pack. I don’t share that to boast – I share because I do remember what it was like to have that craving for more diet soda. I also remember how hungry I thought I was all the time. I knew intellectually that I had consumed enough calories, but I had this drive to eat more. At that time I didn’t realize the Diet Coke was stimulating my appetite. As the director of Slender For Life™ since 1999, I have taught hypnosis for weight loss to hundreds of people who have ended their addiction to diet soda and improved their health.

Three Reasons to Rethink that Diet Coke You’re About to Drink

A fascinating article – Artificially Sweetened Beverages Cause for Concern – recently published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), challenges the notion that artificial sweeteners are risk free.

The article’s author, David S. Ludwig, MD, PhD, a Harvard professor and Founding Director of the Optimal Weight for Life (OWL) clinic at Children’s Hospital, Boston, makes three important points, especially in the context of artificially sweetened drinks:

1. Our body gets confused by artificial sweeteners – the dissociation between sweet taste and calorie intake may put the regulatory system that controls hunger and body weight out of sync, thus sabotaging weight loss plans. A study on rodents showed that those fed saccharin actually gained weight compared to rodents fed sucrose.

2. We’re “Infantilizing” our taste sense – Artificial sweeteners are a hundredfold sweeter than sucrose (table sugar). By getting ourselves used to so much sweet, normal sweet flavors, of fruit for example, become bland and so do other healthful foods such as grains and vegetables, thus reducing our willingness to consume them and ultimately the quality of our diet.

3. Long term effects unclear – while there have been many studies on artificial sweeteners and disease such cancer, very few focused on long term weight gain. A seven year study, (San Antonio Heart Study), showed a relationship between diet drink consumption and obesity, but the causation is not clear. Consumption of artificial sweeteners is growing yearly. According to Ludwig,

If trends in consumption continue, the nation will, in effect, have embarked on a massive, uncontrolled, and inadvertent public health experiment. Although many synthetic chemicals have been added to the food supply in recent years, artificial sweeteners in beverages stand out in their ability to interact with evolutionarily ancient sensorineural pathways at remarkably high affinity.

All those years that I thought I was being healthy by drinking the Diet Coke rather than regular Coke I never thought much about what else that soda was doing to my body. I thought nothing of pouring cola on my cars battery terminals to clean them – that Coke just dissolved all that green stuff! I wonder what it was doing to my stomach. Fortunately, thanks to self hypnosis, I haven’t had Coke or Diet Coke for years.

Many people in my Seattle hypnosis and Bainbridge Island hypnosis offices have used weight loss hypnosis to help them to end their desire for diet beverages and to lose weight. Your body is mostly water and it needs to water to replenish. Water is refreshing and and each sip of water can be relaxing. Make water your beverage of choice.

Diet soft drink consumption is associated with an increased risk of vascular events in the Northern Manhattan Study. The study published last month showed that daily diet soda drinkers had a 44% greater chance of heart attack or stroke than those who don’t drink diet soda. Soda has also been linked to osteoporosis and recent chemical analyses by the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), a nonprofit nutrition watchdog group, showed that Coca-Cola, Pepsi-Cola, Diet Coke, and Diet Pepsi contain high levels of 4-methylimidazole (4-MI), a known animal carcinogen. Based on a risk model used by the state of California, CSPI estimates that that the 4-MI in Coke and Pepsi causes about 15,000 cases of cancer in the US. Are you hooked on diet beverages? Hypnosis can help you easily end the desire for diet drinks and help you create a genuine love and desire for drinking water.

Diet Soft Drink Consumption is Associated with an Increased Risk of Vascular Events in the Northern Manhattan Study

Journal of General Internal Medicine, January 27, 2012

BACKGROUND
Diet and regular soft drinks have been associated with diabetes and the metabolic syndrome, and regular soft drinks with coronary heart disease.

OBJECTIVE
To determine the association between soft drinks and combined vascular events, including stroke.

CONCLUSIONS
Daily diet soft drink consumption was associated with several vascular risk factors and with an increased risk for vascular events. Further research is needed before any conclusions can be made regarding the potential health consequences of diet soft drink consumption.

Read Diet Soft Drink Consumption is Associated with an Increased Risk of Vascular Events in the Northern Manhattan Study

Higher consumption of sugar-sweetened beverages is associated with the development of type-2 diabetes and metabolic syndrome (a group of risk factors, including excess weight in the torso and insulin resistance, that together lead to increased risk for coronary artery disease, stroke, and diabetes). And. the no-calorie sweeteners like those found in diet soda may actually make you hungrier and cause you to overeat, as the body can get confused by artificial sweeteners. Let hypnosis work for you and end your desire for diet soda and create a love for drinking water.

I’ll admit that I do enjoy my mug of black coffee each day, but I have never understood energy drinks. I can never get past the label. The list of ingredients should send everyone running.
Energy Drinks Send Thousands
to the ER Each Year

WebMD Health News, November 22, 2011: There’s been a big spike in the number of people who need emergency medical attention after they guzzle popular caffeinated energy drinks, according to a new government report.

The report shows a more than a tenfold increase in the number of emergency room visits tied to the use of these drinks between 2005 and 2009. In 2005, 1,128 ER visits were associated with the use of energy drinks compared to 13,114 in 2009. That number peaked in 2008 with more than 16,000 ER visits linked to energy drinks.

While 44% of cases involved energy drinks in combination with alcohol or other drugs, the report shows most people who wound up in the ER told doctors they had downed only energy drinks.

“There’s been quite a bit of attention paid to those energy drinks that have alcohol with them. What we found was that there are actually more visits for those energy drinks that don’t have alcohol,” says Albert Woodward, PhD, director of the Drug Abuse Warning Network (DAWN) at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration in Rockville, Md. DAWN reports, such as this one, are published periodically by the network.

“People may think that the alcohol-caffeine drinks are dangerous, but they may not have any idea that the caffeine-only drinks are also potentially problematic,” Woodward says.

Sugary Drinks Linked to Heart Risks
in Women

WebMD Health News, November 14, 2011: Once again, sugar-sweetened beverages are on the firing line. New research shows that two or more sugary drinks a day may increase a woman’s waistline and risk of heart disease — even if she doesn’t gain weight.

In a study of more than 4,000 people aged 45 to 84, women who drank at least two sugar-sweetened beverages a day were nearly four times as likely to develop higher than normal levels of blood fats called triglycerides in their blood, compared with women who drank less than one a day.

They were also more likely to pack on belly fat. Belly fat has been linked to a number a health risks, including heart disease and diabetes.

And they were four times more likely to have abnormal blood glucose levels, indicating pre-diabetes. The risks were higher even in women of normal weight and women who didn’t gain weight.

One in two Americans drinks at least one sugary drink a day, according to the CDC. And one in 20 Americans drinks four or more a day.

Read Sugary Drinks Linked to Heart Risks in Women

A 20 oz bottle of soda contains 72 grams of sugar. It’s supposed to be 2 1/2 servings, an intake of 29 grams of sugar per serving, but most people drink the entire bottle! A sugar cube is 2 grams, so a 20 oz bottle contains 36 sugar cubes worth of sugar, as represented in this photo.

And of course the drink companies are targeting our kids with their commercials for their calorie laden sugar water. And, childhood obesity continues to rise. If you or your kids are drinking something other than water, check the label. What are the ingredients? How many calories? How much sugar? How many words can’t you pronounce? Even if it is real 100% juice, have them eat the fruit or vegetable as God made it – whole. Juicing destroys the fiber and you end up mainlining the sugar from the fruit or vegetable.

Too Much Sugar in Drinks Marketed to Kids

WebMD, October 31, 2011: It’s no surprise that many sodas have a lot of sugar. What may be more surprising is that many fruit drinks, often billed as healthier alternatives, are often loaded with close to the same amount of sugar and calories.

Researchers from Yale University’s Rudd Center for Food Policy and Obesity looked at the contents of close to 600 drinks made by 14 companies. They included sugary sodas, energy and sports drinks, fruit drinks, flavored waters, and iced teas as well as diet energy drinks and diet children’s fruit drinks.

They found that an 8-ounce serving of a full-calorie, non-diet fruit drink has on average 110 calories and 7 teaspoons of sugar. This is equal to the amount that is found in an 8-ounce serving of sugary soda or energy drink.

Many fruit and energy drinks have as much added sugar and calories as sugary sodas. Some of these drinks have as much sugar as an 8-year-old should consume in a day. Full-calorie iced teas, sports drinks, and flavored waters typically contain 3 to 5 teaspoons of sugar per 8-ounce serving, the report states.

Drinking just one 8-ounce sugar-sweetened drink everyday increases a child’s odds for becoming obese by 60%. Sugary drinks are the No. 1 source of added sugar in our diets and the No. 1 source of calories for teens, the report states.

Parents believe that drinks like Capri Sun, Sunny D, Gatorade, and Vitamin Water are healthy choices for their kids, but they are not.

Researchers were surprised by how little juice there was in children’s fruit drinks. And a lot of diet drinks have artificial sweeteners. But unless you know the chemical name, you wouldn’t realize it. The only appropriate drinks for children are water, low-fat milk, and 100% fruit juices.

Don’t be fooled by healthy-looking labels. Read the fine print and if you can’t pronounce it, you probably don’t need or want it in your child’s body.

It’s probably no surprise to you that teens and young men drink way too much sugary drinks. I hadn’t realized it until recently, but many restaurants now offer bottomless sodas with a meal. The other night at a local restaurant it was alarming to see huge baskets of burgers with unlimited french fries and continuous soda refills being devoured by overweight children and adults. It is so sad to see people choosing to destroy their health. Restaurants are serving larger portions because consumers are demanding it. In a recent conversation with a tourist form Europe who works as a waitress, I was told that the number one complaint from American tourists is that the portions are too small. Sadly, it is that we have become accustomed to consuming large quantities of fat and sugar which result in the diseases of obesity like Type 2 diabetes.
Teens, Young Men Way Over Limit On Sugary Drinks

Reuters, Wed, August 31 2011: About half of the population drinks a sugar-sweetened beverage on any given day, with teens and young men consuming way more than recommended limits for staying healthy, according to new government data. The average male in the survey consumed 175 calories in a day from drinks containing added sugar, while the typical female consumed 94 calories from such drinks.

Boys aged 12 to 19 consumed 273 calories a day from sugar-sweetened drinks, or the equivalent of about two 12-ounce cans of carbonated cola — more than any other group. Men aged 20 to 39 consumed 252 calories a day from beverages containing added sugar, the second-highest amount.

The American Heart Association recommends getting no more than 450 calories a week from sugar-sweetened beverages, or less than three cans of soda. They include sodas, fruit drinks, energy drinks, sports and sweetened bottled waters.

Close to 26 million Americans have diabetes, and most have Type 2, the kind linked to poor diet and lack of exercise. “If you wouldn’t eat 22 packs of sugar, why are you drinking it?” said Dr. Jonathan Fielding, public health director in Los Angeles.
