Kathy Freston, Bestselling Author, “Veganist: Lose Weight, Get Healthy, Change the World” wrote in a recent blog post that meat is the new tobacco. Even if you really love the taste, even if you grew up eating meat, even if its the manly thing to do, I just don’t understand with all the health consequences, why you would eat meat. Why would you do that to yourself and to your body. Many of my family members eat meat and dairy products and have the diseases like obesity, heart disease, diabetes and cancer caused by meat and dairy. Their philosophy is that when the good Lord wants to take me home, He will. I don’t have an argument with that. I just look at how limited their life on this earth is and knowing that their disease are a result of behavioral choices, wonder why they would imprison their body in fat and disease. Personally, I don’t think that is what God intended for this temple. What I do know is that hypnosis for weight loss can help you change your eating preferences so that you can lose weight and keep it off. Discover what weight loss hypnosis can do for you with Slender For Life™.

Meat Is the New Tobacco

HUFFPOST Healthy Living, March 5, 2012: For many years, tobacco companies were able to maintain a strong pro-tobacco façade. Smoking focuses the mind. It’s good for you (doctors smoke!). It’s great for weight loss. It’s sexy. It’s cool. The tobacco industry spent big bucks to keep these ideas in the mind of the public for as long as it could.

When I think about the effect of animal products on human health, I’m reminded of how quickly we’ve done a national about face on tobacco, and I look forward to the day when the Times magazine has a similar apology from someone who promoted animal products — because the evidence is in and it continues to grow: Animal products kill a lot more Americans than tobacco does.

The West’s three biggest killers — heart disease, cancer, and stroke — are linked to excessive animal product consumption, and vegetarians have much lower risks of all three. Vegetarians also have a fraction of the obesity and diabetes rates of the general population — of course, both diseases are at epidemic levels and are only getting worse.

But much more important than the vegetarian community’s general statistics are what can be done with the right vegetarian diet: For some years now, doctors have been not just preventing, but even reversing, heart disease using a low-fat vegetarian diet.

That’s right — the disease that kills almost as many Americans as everything else combined can be not just prevented, but reversed, with a low fat plant-based diet, as documented by Dr. Caldwell Esselstyn in Prevent and Reverse Heart Disease.

There’s a link from animal product consumption to our country’s No. 2 killer, too: According to the American Institute for Cancer Research, about as much cancer could be prevented by diet and exercise as is caused by smoking — and you know what’s causing all that cancer? It’s not whole grains, legumes, fruits, or vegetables. Dr. T. Colin Campbell has documented the link between cancer and animal products.

There’s a lot of money in the meat industry, just like there’s a lot of money in big tobacco. For many years, the tobacco establishment pointed to elderly smokers like George Burns and millions of others as proof that their very-natural product could not be harmful. Even long-distance runners and members of the military could be found smoking a cigarette at the end of a long run or intense drill.

Similarly, today the meat industry points to the fact that there are an awful lot of old meat-eaters, conveniently ignoring our sky-high heart disease and cancer rates, as well as our ballooning rates of obesity and diabetes, all of which are linked to their products.

Did you know . . .

Obesity rate (with a BMI of 30 or higher) among the general U.S. population: 18 percent.

Obesity rate among vegetarians: 6 percent.

Average weight of vegan adults compared to non-vegetarian adults: 10–20 pounds lighter.

Fat in a single foil-packaged restaurant serving of butter: 6 grams.

As of 2010, fat in a Burger King Triple Whopper with cheese: 1130 calories and 75 grams. Fat in a Double Whopper: 57 grams and a total of 900 calories.

Fat in the average veggie burger found in U.S. supermarkets and natural food stores: 3 grams.

Among the diseases associated with obesity: heart disease, certain types of cancer, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, arthritis, breathing problems and psychological disorders, such as depression.

Harvard studied 75,000 women for a decade and the results suggest that the more fruits and vegetables women eat, the less likely they will become obese.

Researchers at the National Cancer Institute followed over 75,000 people for ten years to find out which behaviors were most associated with weight loss and which with weight gain. They wrapped tape measures around people’s waists for a decade and found that the one dietary behavior most associated with an expanding waistline was high meat consumption, and the dietary behavior most strongly associated with a loss of abdominal fat was high vegetable consumption

Eating vegetables and grains for health is not new information. More than 2600 years ago, Daniel said to his guard, “Please test your servants for ten days: Give us nothing but vegetables to eat and water to drink. Then compare our appearance with that of the young men who eat the royal food, and treat your servants in accordance with what you see. So he agreed to this and tested them for ten days. At the end of the ten days they looked healthier and better nourished than any of the young men who ate the royal food. So the guard took away their choice food and wine they were to drink and gave them vegetables instead.: [Daniel 1:12 – 16]

(Hint – not from drinking milk). According to the dairy councils own data, milk (or any other dairy product) does not build strong bones. In fact, in a 12-year Harvard study of 78,000 women, those who drank milk three times a day actually broke more bones than women who rarely drank milk. And, according to the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine (PCRM), a 2005 review published in Pediatrics showed that milk consumption does not improve bone integrity in children. The most healthful calcium sources are green leafy vegetables and legumes, or “greens and beans” for short. Broccoli, Brussels sprouts, collards, kale, mustard greens, Swiss chard, and other greens are loaded with highly absorbable calcium and a host of other healthful nutrients. If you are like many people and don’t like greens, hypnosis can help you change that. I have witnessed many times over the years people quickly switching from “I hate vegetables” to “I can’t believe how much I’m enjoying greens and other vegetables now that I’m using self-hypnosis.”

Calcium and Strong Bones

How to Get Calcium into Your Bones

Get calcium from greens, beans, or fortified foods.

Exercise, so calcium has somewhere to go.

Get vitamin D from the sun, or supplements if you need them.

How to Keep It There

Reduce calcium losses by avoiding excess salt.

Get your protein from plants, not animal products.

Don’t smoke.

I have completed 5 marathons, ridden my bike over 100 miles in one day, completed the STP (Seattle to Portland Bike Ride of 204 miles), climbed Mount Rainier and went on a 30 mile backpacking trip with my son last September. I have never felt that I was lacking energy or strength. In fact, my younger neighbors shake their heads when they see me go for an early Saturday morning bike ride, come home and haul wood, mow the lawn and do other yard work along with other chores around the house. I’m often asked to slow down so that they don’t look bad. You can eat plant-based food and have a strong, healthy and active body.
Sculptured by Weights and a Strict Vegan Diet

The New York Times, January 4, 2012: As a vegan, Jimi Sitko, 29, does not eat meat, dairy or, he said, “anything else that comes from an animal.” As a bodybuilder, he spends hours at the gym lifting barbells, running on a treadmill and sculpturing his 5-foot-11, 180-pound body. Then he spray-tans and parades before a panel of judges in a posing suit, known in the sport as a mankini. He is preparing for a competition in March.

There is little official data on competitive bodybuilders who are vegan, though the Web site veganbodybuilding.com has more than 5,000 registered users.

Denny Kakos, the president of the International Natural Bodybuilding Association, said he had no vegan bodybuilders entering his competitions in the late 1980s and early ’90s. Today, vegans make up a sliver of the approximately 6,000 people who compete through the group each year, but they have been a steady, small presence since the 2000s, Kakos said.

Organic meat is not health food! The Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine (PCRM) tells us that “while concentrations of some contaminants may be decreased, switching to organic meat does nothing to decrease the risk for the diseases that remain the biggest killers of Americans. Cholesterol, fat (especially saturated fat), and animal protein are the major culprits in meat that are associated with higher risks of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. They are also associated with the development of the many risk factors that lead to these diseases, including obesity and hypertension.”

Organic Meats Are Not Health Foods

A Diet for all the Right Reasons

For those interested in promoting a healthy diet, it is important to teach and understand the many factors that play into health and disease and to adopt practices that address health as a whole. While organic standards may help to improve some aspects of health, it cannot help prevent obesity, high blood pressure, diabetes, heart disease, and many forms of cancer, nor will it cure the environmental contamination and resulting health hazards plaguing the production and consumption of animal foods. A plant-based diet that is naturally low in carcinogens, pathogens, and disease-causing fat and cholesterol is the best medicine for promoting a healthy life.

Read Organic Meats Are Not Health Foods

Animal products, however they are produced, increase the risk of many diseases. I grew up on a dairy farm and most of my life I lived on beef, poultry, pork and dairy products. While living on the farm, it was all organic (that’s all we knew back then). But, it was also on the farm drinking organic raw milk that I was exposed to tuberculosis and ended up at Mayo clinic. Folks, organic raw milk is not health food.

If you are one who can’t imagine a life as a vegan, hypnosis can help you change that. A plant-based diet is healthy and it can be delicious, easy and affordable. A vegan meal can even be gourmet. If you are truly ready to get serious about your health and health of your family, learn hypnosis and make healthy eating your way of life. Even though I wrote a post last year about the Vegetarian Starter Kit I decided that it would be worthwhile to post again with the link so that you can download it – for free. A vegetarian menu is a powerful and pleasurable way to achieve good health. The vegetarian eating pattern is based on a wide variety of foods that are satisfying, delicious, and healthful. The Vegetarian Starter Kit is provided by the Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine (PCRM).

Abundant evidence suggests that the most healthful diets set aside animal products and also reduce fats in general, while including large amounts of vegetables and fruits. Eliminating meat and dairy products from your diet is a powerful step in disease prevention. Vegetarians avoid meat, fish, and poultry. Those who include dairy products and eggs in their diets are called lacto-ovo vegetarians. Vegans (pure vegetarians) eat no meat, fish, poultry, eggs, or dairy products. While there is a considerable advantage to a lacto-ovo vegetarian pattern, vegan diets are the healthiest of all, reducing risk of a broad range of health concerns.

Teens Don’t Eat Enough Fruits and Veggies

WebMD Health News, November 23, 2011: Many American teenagers may be eating fewer fruits and vegetables each day than nationwide guidelines recommend for this age group, a CDC report suggests. In 2010, about one in four high school students ate fruit less than once a day, and one in three didn’t eat vegetables more than once a day.

Although diets rich in fruits and vegetables can help control weight and are also linked with a lower risk of chronic diseases and some cancers, most teens are falling short of the recommended daily levels.

The survey of 10,765 high school students showed that teens ate both fruits and vegetables an average of 1.2 times a day. Researchers say that’s likely to mean that they’re eating much less than the 1.5 cups of fruits and 2.5 cups of vegetables for girls, and 2 cups of fruit and 3 cups of vegetables for boys that dietary guidelines advise for many kids this age who participate in less than 30 minutes of physical activity daily.

To improve teens’ interest in these healthy foods, it is recommended that more school cafeterias offer salad bars and that school breakfast and lunch programs regularly include fruits and vegetables that students may not get a chance to taste at home.

Farm-to-school programs can also give students access to fresh-picked produce at meals. And school gardens can teach teens where foods come from and involve them in their preparation.
