NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams recently reported that the Center For Science In The Public Interest looked at the sodium found in meals in 17 restaurants. Chilli’s, Olive Garden and Red Lobster were 3 big offenders serving meals loaded with sodium. Some of the meals had 2 – 4 teaspoons of salt. Government guidelines recommend that healthy adults should get no more than about 1 teaspoon of salt per day. In some restaurants you can get 4 days worth of recommended sodium in just one meal.
A high salt diet will increase blood pressure and can lead to serious illness. The Center For Science In The Public Interest is asking the Federal Government to limit the amount of sodium in packaged foods and restaurant meals.
If you are wondering just how much sodium should be in a packaged food, Jeff Novic recommends a 1 to 1 ratio of calories to sodium. If the package contains 150 calories, it should have no more that 150mg of sodium.
A can of Amy’s Low Fat Organic Black Bean Vegetable Soup has 130 calories and 430mg of sodium! That’s more than 3 times the recommended amount.
