I remember when I weighed 200 plus pounds – as much as 260 pounds – I was never hungry. It just wasn’t an option. I almost feared hunger and I ate and made sure that I was never hungry. I just never went there. I ate calorie dense, high fat, high sugar foods. I didn’t eat a lot of fruit (if I did it was with ice cream or in a croissant with cheese), and I didn’t eat very many vegetables that weren’t smothered in cheese.

I know today that hunger truly is a good thing – it means that it is time to eat. And, being truly physically hungry, healthy foods taste really great. It is amazing the tastes and flavors that come forward when you eat simple, healthy foods when you are hungry.

I know hunger and starvation exist. I have administered a food bank and a hot meal program. That is not what I am talking about here. Most of the people who I know who are over weight and obese have cupboards full of food as do their neighbors. And most of us have grocery stores and restaurants within a few minutes of our homes. For most of us in the U.S., we have access to plenty of food – we do not need to fear hunger.
