Teens suffer from anxiety
I’ve witnessed in my Bainbridge Island Counseling and Hypnosis office that today teens suffer from anxiety more than when I was their age. When I listen to teens, their parents and their teachers I am glad that I didn’t have the pressures that teens have today.
According to the New York Times, “Anxiety is the most common mental-health disorder in the United States, affecting nearly one-third of both adolescents and adults, according to the National Institute of Mental Health.”
I worked full time when I was in high school and college and I went to school full time. And, my 3.0 GPA got me into excellent undergraduate and graduate schools. Tuition was also a heck of a lot cheaper. I question that I would have the same opportunities today.
What I do know is that many teens have benefited from the mindfulness hypnosis and stress reduction techniques that I have taught them. I meet with teens in my Bainbridge or Seattle office and with teens across the U.S. online.
As a result they are happier, calm, relaxed and sleep better. Frequently grades improve, sports performance improve and relationships with family and friends are peaceful.

Why Are More American Teenagers Than Ever Suffering From Severe Anxiety?
Over the last decade, anxiety has overtaken depression as the most common reason college students seek counseling services. In its annual survey of students, the American College Health Association found a significant increase — to 62 percent in 2016 from 50 percent in 2011 — of undergraduates reporting “overwhelming anxiety” in the previous year. Surveys that look at symptoms related to anxiety are also telling. In 1985, the Higher Education Research Institute at U.C.L.A. began asking incoming college freshmen if they “felt overwhelmed by all I had to do” during the previous year. In 1985, 18 percent said they did. By 2010, that number had increased to 29 percent. Last year, it surged to 41 percent.
