Are you creating hell out of heaven?
How much of your precious time on this earth are you creating hell out of heaven? Be honest. We all do it.
On a beautiful day of blue sky and sunshine on Bainbridge Island it was warm (53℉) for mid-January here in the northwest. I stopped on my bike ride at the foot of Toe Jam Hill to take in the beauty of the water and Mount Rainier.
As I gazed across the water, two people walked past talking about the miserable weather we’ve been having. Cold, damp, gray, dark and rain. That’s all they talked about.
I thought, “How sad”. Here is this gorgeous warm, sunny, blue sky day and they are talking about is rain.
I was reminded of Paradise Lost when John Milton wrote that “the mind is its own place, and in itself can make heaven out of hell and hell out of heaven.”
People who come to my office are often caught up in all that is wrong in their life. They have lost sight of all the good in their life. The experiences they share with me are events and traumas that occurred in the past. They are not happening now. And yet, their mental, emotional and physical reality was as if these events were occurring in that moment. They were wrapped up in the negative self hypnosis trance of fear and anxiety.
Fight or Flight Response
When we are stressed, when we are fearful, we begin to look for everything that is wrong and we filter out all that is good.
If someone is five minutes late in picking you up, you spend four minutes and fifty-nine seconds remembering every other time that person was late. And then you add to it all other memories (real or imagined) of every time someone else showed up late in your life, or worse yet, just didn’t show up for you at all!
And with these thoughts of disappointment you feel hurt, sad, fearful, unloved and angry. Then it’s off to the races in the Fight or Flight Response which triggers an even more eager negative fantasy adventure which produces an even stronger Fight or Flight Response. Your brain filters out that you may love the person that is late and filters all that is good and kind about the person who is picking you up.

I am creating heaven by joyfully being my best self.
Does this internal temper tantrum, this anxiety attack, sound familiar? I’ve yet to meet anyone with a pulse who hasn’t experienced this in one form or another. I know that I sure do. Making hell out of heaven is just part of being human.
When you spin out of control with the negative thoughts and emotions you are in a powerful trance. Your body reacts just as if it’s being attacked creating toxins that weaken your immune system leaving you feeling exhausted. The internal atmosphere that is created is toxic and abusive, beating you down and holding you back.
Adding to this, your mind is designed to filter out large amounts of information. You simply cannot pay conscious attention to every single detail being collected with what you see, what you hear, what you smell, what you taste and what you feel. This protection mechanism keeps you from going crazy.
For instance, you probably aren’t thinking about the little toe on your left foot. And now you are. It also happens that when you are focused on fear and anxiety your mind filters out the love, joy and goodness in your life.
These old thoughts, behaviors and emotions are hardwired. You have fired and wired them so often that they have become normal, familiar and even comfortable.
Using the Greatest Expression of You process you can change this. You really can rewire your brain.
Creating heaven out of hell
What most people don’t realize is that the hell we create in our own mind is completely self-inflicted. Charles Darwin said that “The highest possible stage in moral culture is when we recognize that we ought to control our thoughts.” Keep in mind that it is your perception of the events in your life which determines whether a situation is heaven or hell.
When you are being your best self, you can create heaven out of hell. You recognize and acknowledge the upsets, challenges and stressors that occur in life and take action. As the old adage goes, you can turn lemons into lemonade.
Joyfully be your best self today and create heaven.
