Are carbs bad?

I’m frequently asked, “are carbs bad?”

I received this email from Hank in Duluth, MN.

“Roger – I’ve been following your posts for a while now and even though I grew up in a meat family I’m seriously considering going plant-based. My wife’s not so sure. Her sister keeps telling her how bad carbs are.

I’ve done Atkins, Paleo, Blood Type and other low-carb diets. It’s been hammered into my head that carbs are bad. When I did those diets, I lost weight while I was on them, but I would become sick, stop the diet and put the weight back on.

Please help me understand. Are carbs bad for you?”

Our bodies crave carbohydrates

Here is my reply:

“No Hank, carbs aren’t bad for you. Obviously, I’m not referring to potato chips or Oreos.

As humans, our bodies crave carbohydrates. Our bodies need carbohydrates, even in childhood, as a nutrient. Carbohydrates are the most efficient forms of energy that we can consume. The foods our bodies crave and need for nutrition are vegetables, whole grains and fruit.

For centuries, people in Asia lived on white rice. People in the mountains of Peru lived on potatoes. There was no obesity, diabetes, heart disease or cancer. They were strong and healthy people.

Some people tell me that they are “hooked on carbs.” Unfortunately, when people tell me they’re hooked on carbs, what they’re really saying is that they’re hooked on fat, salt and sugar.

People don’t get hooked on a baked potato. They are hooked on the fats like gravy, cheese, sour cream, butter and bacon – or the fat and salt of potato chips.

How about peas or spinach. Do you know anyone that is hooked on these carbohydrates? Or, how about strawberry’s or bananas?

Your brain needs carbohydrates for fuel. People who do high fat, low-carb diets like Atkins frequently report short-term memory loss (along with a host of other diet induced illnesses).

Whole grains, beans and legumes have the fiber to fill you up and keep you full.

Unfortunately, the marketers of the low-carb fad diets and low-carb packaged foods have done an amazing snow-job convincing people that carbs are bad. No – carbs aren’t bad – it’s the processed foods they manufacture and sell that are bad for you.
