Can hypnosis be helpful for end-of-life?
I received this email from Charles in Newport Beach, CA, who asked, “Can hypnosis be helpful for end-of-life?”
“Roger,
I saw that you are on a panel at the Beautiful Dying Expo. My wife and I hope to attend, depending on how she is feeling.
My wife has stage 4 cancer and the prognosis is that she has about 4 months to live. Her goal is to have one last Christmas with our kids and grandkids.
We are wondering how hypnosis can be helpful for end-of-life. What is the goal and what is a realistic expectation for her should she decide to work with you? Specifically, she is wondering if hypnosis can help her to live until after the holidays. Is that something hypnosis can help her do?
Charles”

Hypnosis for end-of-life
“Hi Charles,
I am so sorry to hear about your wife. Even though I have been with many people in similar circumstances over the years, I can not imagine what your wife, you and your family are going through.
I’m going to start with your last question, as it’s the most challenging question to answer. Let me begin by saying that there is no way of knowing if someone lives longer if they use hypnosis than they would have had they not used it.
Medical hypnosis can certainly help her feel more comfortable by reducing pain. It would be reasonable to expect a reduction in stress which can help boost the immune system and have a positive benefit for longevity. Medical hypnosis can also help her body to work in cooperation with any medications and it can reduce side effects so that she feels better.
You asked about the goal for hypnosis for end-of-life. The goal varies from person to person. Some people want hypnosis to reduce fear and anxiety and to reduce stress. Others want to use hypnosis for a death rehearsal which can be empowering.
People frequently tell me they want hypnosis for peace of mind and sometimes it’s to have a method to process their impending death.
Joyfully live every moment to the fullest
I ask each person that I work with what is your goal for hypnosis. Almost always, the goal that I hear is all about living every moment that is left to the fullest. It’s about maintaining hope even with imminent death.
So, a realistic expectation is that your wife joyfully live every moment to the fullest.
And Charles, I suggest that hypnosis sessions be for both your wife and for you. Sometimes we might meet individually and other times together. Hypnosis for end-of-life can be a valuable asset for partners and other family members both before and after the death of a loved one. You are going through an extreme stressor and it is critical that you give care to you too.
If you do make it to the Beautiful Dying Expo Saturday, please be sure to introduce yourself. Feel free to text me while you are there so that we can find each other.
I look forward to meeting you.
My best wishes,
Roger”
