How do I know if I am hypnotized?

This week’s “Ask Roger” question comes from Thomas in Phoenix, AZ., who asked, “How do I know if I am hypnotized?”

“Hi Roger. My wife read your last week post to me, How do I know if I can be hypnotized?, which made me wonder how do I know if I am hypnotized?

My wife has suggested that I contact you about some online sessions for an autoimmune disease. I used hypnosis once before to stop smoking. While I stopped smoking, I was never convinced that I was hypnotized. I heard everything, and I felt that I could get up and leave anytime I wanted to. So, I don’t know if it worked or not. Was I hypnotized and how do I know?

Thanks

Thomas”

How do I know if I am hypnotized?

Hypnosis is learning to take control of the trance that you are in

Hi Thomas,

Your question is one that I am asked frequently. But, first, let me ask you a couple of questions:

  1. Do I understand correctly that you went to a hypnotherapist to stop smoking and you did stop smoking – is that correct?
  2. How would you know if you were hypnotized?

Thomas, if you want to know what hypnosis feels like, close your eye lids, notice your breath in and your breath out. Now, open your eye lids. That’s what hypnosis feels like.

When you used to smoke, you used to go into a smoking trance. Now, you no longer do that. We are always in trance. We are never not in trance. Hypnosis feels like when you are absorbed into a movie, singing to the radio as you drive down the road or get off an elevator on the wrong floor.

How do you know you were hypnotized? You quick smoking. From my perspective, hypnosis is learning to take control of the trance that you are in and you did that. You are now a former smoker.

I think it is important that all hypnosis is self-hypnosis. You are never controlled by a hypnotherapist, you are always in control. As hypnotherapists we don’t hypnotize you. You do that. We are your tour guides. We educate you and coach you so that you successfully achieve your goals.

I teach most all my clients, self-hypnosis so that you know how to be in control of your thoughts, your emotions and your behaviors. I never want you to be dependent on me or any hypnosis recordings. I will show you how you can use hypnosis multiple times on the go throughout your day.

I’m happy to meet with you online to hear more about your autoimmune disease and talk about how hypnosis can benefit you. Please give me a call at 206-903-1232 or send me an email to Roger@HypnosisHealthInfo.com.
