How do I know when I’m full?
This week I received an email from Jim who asked, How do I know when I’m full?
Here is what Jim wrote: “Roger you talk a lot about stopping eating when you have enough fuel in your body. But, I don’t know what that is. I don’t when I’ve eaten enough. I know how miserable I often feel when I’ve eaten too much, but I don’t know when I’m hungry and I don’t know when I’m full. I eat so that I don’t get hungry. Is there a trick you can teach me? Can you hypnotize me to not be hungry?”
Thanks for the questions, Jim. I’m going to start with your last question. I wouldn’t want to hypnotize you to not be hungry. Physical hunger is a good thing. It means it’s time to eat. Hunger is essential for our survival.
I remember when I was obese, I never allowed hunger. I was almost fearful at the thought of being hungry. My thought was, “I might get hungry so I’d better eat now.”
I tell all Slender For Life™ hypnosis for weight loss clients to think of a scale of zero to ten. Zero means starving and ten is stuffed. Satisfied, where you have enough fuel in your body is a 5 or 6.
Hunger is a good thing-it means it’s time to eat.
In my book, Becoming Slender For Life, I wrote:
“Think of eating as fueling your car. When the gas pump shuts off, you stop pumping gas. And that’s what you should do when your appetite tells you that you have enough food (fuel) in your body. And when do you put gas in your car? When it’s nearly empty! You don’t stop at every gas station you drive by to put gas in your car.
Fueling up only when necessary should be our relationship with food. Hunger is a good thing-it means it’s time to eat.
Try this: touch your knee for a moment. Now, how much more aware are you of your knee? Before you touched it, you probably weren’t even thinking about your knee. Your hand works like a magnifying glass-it enhances awareness. You can get in touch with your level of fullness by simply placing your hand on your stomach. This allows you to be conscious-of whether or not you are hungry, and as you are eating a meal, when you are full.”
