Survive Easter brunch

“How do I survive Easter brunch with my family?” is this week’s Ask Roger email from Diana in Roseville, Minnesota. She wrote:

“I’m really proud of how well I’ve done with weight loss over the last 3 months of working with you. As of this morning, I’m down 26 pounds!

But I’m coming up on my first family dinner on Easter Sunday. Easter is a big deal in my family. All my siblings, their kids and grandkids will gather after church at Mom and Dad’s for brunch.

The house will be filled with the typical Easter candy. I think that I will be fine with that, it doesn’t call to me at all thanks to you.

What scares me is the meal itself. It will be lots of eggs, ham, hash browns, cinnamon rolls and rich desserts. It’s potluck and we all contribute but only eating a salad won’t cut it – there will be too much pressure from my family. They all still think that eggs are a health food.

What do I do? How do I survive Easter brunch with my family?”

Survive Easter brunch

Focus on healthy foods

“Diana you do have a lot to be proud of – you’ve been doing wonderfully! Consider making that day a “maintenance” day. By that I mead – don’t focus on weight loss – focus on maintaining your current weight. You can continue toward your goal weight the next day. Maybe you do enjoy a special desert or a piece of good dark chocolate (not the artificially flavored, chemically filled typical Easter candy). Be conscious with your choice. Make that one bite of chocolate the best one.

I urge you to focus on healthy foods that you can eat. On March 23 I posted a recipe for a Breakfast Skillet that is out of this world delicious and I think welcomed at any Easter gathering. I will be making that for our family gathering.

When you dish up your plate choose the healthy food that you bring. That Breakfast Skillet with a few pieces of fruit will fill your plate and leave you feeling satisfied. If this dish doesn’t do it for you, there are more than 40,000 free healthy recipes for you in the Slender For Life™ Recipe Library.

If you receive comments or questions from your family members as to why you aren’t eating eggs or Peeps, just smile and say, “what I have here is so good – that’s enough for me!” and then let it go. Change the subject to something other than food or weight loss.

Of course, do your self-hypnosis and the Greatest Expression of You first thing in the morning, before you walk into your parent’s house and maybe even in the bathroom before brunch.

Remember that you are there to have a great time with your family. It’s not a contest to see who can eat the most food the fastest.

Have a great time with your family!”
