Hypnosis for cancer
Over the past two months I have had several inquiries about hypnosis for cancer. For today’s Ask Roger post, I’m combing some of the questions into this post.
If you have questions for Ask Roger, please email them to me.

1. Can hypnosis cure cancer?
As far as I know, there is no scientific evidence that hypnosis can cure cancer. Having said that there are many anecdotal accounts of patients whose cancer went into remission after undergoing hypnotherapy. Curing someone from cancer with hypnosis is not a focus of most Medical Hypnosis sessions.
2. What can I expect from hypnosis for cancer?
When working with me, you can expect that I will do my best to meet your goals for hypnosis. Over the past 23 years I have had many clients who had cancer and I have worked in cancer centers, hospitals and support groups.
People have many different expectations. When someone is given a diagnosis of cancer, they may experience anxiety, stress, depression, fear, and loss of control. Hypnosis can alleviate these symptoms. Individuals about to begin chemotherapy or radiation therapy may find that hypnotherapy can drastically reduce or eliminate the side effects of these treatments such as nausea, fatigue, hot flashes, and sleep dysfunction. Hypnotherapy can help you to relax, and better cope with treatment and pain. I’ve also helped people overcome claustrophobia when having an MRI or radiation treatment.
Hypnosis can also help increase desire to eat and help with the taste of food.
3. Can my spouse/partner be in the hypnosis session with me?
Yes! I encourage clients who have cancer to invite their husband, wife, partner or other caregiver to attend the sessions. Caregiver fatigue is real and can impact both the person with cancer and the caregiver. By including the caregiver, there is the opportunity for the caregiver to receive the benefits of hypnosis and the caregiver is better equipped to support the person with cancer to use the mindfulness hypnosis tools that I offer.
The space in my office is safe and sacred. Frequently couples can safely have difficult conversations in my office about cancer, cancer treatment, returning to life after cancer and end-of-life that they may not have on their own.
4. I’m a snow bird. I will be leaving for my home in Canada in April. Is there enough time for hypnosis to be effective?
I have clients online worldwide. We can start your sessions now in my Palm Desert Hypnosis office and we can continue online when you return home. Online sessions work just as well and almost like in office sessions. Clients forget within the first few minutes of an online session that we are not in the same room together.
5. How many sessions does it take for cancer?
This is fair question and one that most people ask, but the honest answer is, “I don’t know.” How many sessions you have will be driven by you and your goals with hypnosis. I typically will tell people to plan of 4 or 5 sessions to learn some specific hypnotic tools. Some people want in-depth therapy and others want less. As a client, you get to choose how frequently you want hypnosis and for how many sessions. I do have clients that have been with me for 23-years. It may be 1 to 2 years between sessions, but when they feel the need, they request a “mental massage.”
6. I’m in remission from cancer, is Medical Hypnosis appropriate for me?
Yes, hypnosis can be powerful for people who have completed cancer care and are now readjusting to life and trying to find their “new normal.” There are many potential physical, mental and emotional challenges that can make life after cancer challenging. Hypnosis can help you to achieve equanimity and get on with your life so that you can create your future to be bigger than your past.
Major cancer centers use medical hypnosis
Worldwide, major cancer centers use medical hypnosis to meet a variety of patient needs. Hypnosis is an effective tool in dealing with the physical symptoms of cancer as well as decreasing need for anesthesia during surgery, alleviating pain, nausea, fatigue and emotional distress.
