Strong willed

I received this email from Patrick in Wilmington, Vermont, who asked, “I’m strong willed and I don’t think I can be hypnotized. Can I be?” He wrote:

“Roger,

My sister-in-law is one of your hypnosis for arthritis clients and speaks highly of you. She has been telling me all about how you have helped her reduce her arthritis symptoms.

I was just diagnosed with prostate cancer and she is adamant that I must meet with you.

I’m strong willed and I don’t think I can be hypnotized. Can I be?

I live in Wilmington, VT so we will need to do hypnosis online.

Thank you,

Patrick”

Strong willed people are perfect for hypnosis

“Hi Patrick,

I love it that you are strong willed. Strong willed people are perfect for hypnosis. Let’s start with this:

Start thinking in your own mind about how strong willed you are and about all of your doubts about how hypnosis won’t work for you and why you don’t think you can be hypnotized.

Hypnotic trance

What was the story you were telling yourself? That was hypnotic trance.

Now, humor me for a moment, please. Imagine, visualize, feel, or think about your most relaxing place, preferably outdoors. Are you walking, sitting, laying or standing still? Is it a warm sunny day or cold, wet day? What do you see? What do you hear? What do you smell?

Now, where are you?!

When I do that, I go to Paipu beach on Maui. I can feel the straw mat under my back. The heat of the sand through the mat and the heat of the sun on my body. I hear the birds in the bushes behind me, the movement of the coconut leaves and the waves of the ocean. And, I can smell the sweet scent of plumeria mixed with the salt air.

These are examples of trance.

And for goodness sakes, don’t smell the popcorn!

Always in trance

Here’s the deal Patrick, we are always in trance. We are never not in trance. Hypnosis is learning to take control of the trance that you are in.

When you are driving down the road and you hear the first note of a song that you haven’t heard since high school and you immediately start singing it, you are in the driving music trance.

You haven’t told me your goals for hypnosis, but frequently people with cancer experience anxiety from the uncertainty of the disease and the challenges of treatment. Or, perhaps it’s to reduce pain or reduce side effects of treatment.

If you are experiencing anxiety, we want to get you out of the anxiety trance, and back into your body being mindful, calm and relaxed.

If you are experiencing pain, we want to get out of the pain trance and increase your level of comfort.

From my perspective, 100% of people are hypnotizable. It is a choice as to the extent you wish to play along. I, or no other hypnotherapist, can ever make you do anything that you don’t want to do. So, if you want to be hypnotized to achieve your goals, you can be.

Patrick, let’s talk on the phone so that we can learn more about each other and develop a plan of action.

My best wishes,

Roger”
