Surviving Thanksgiving

It seems that many people are anxious about surviving Thanksgiving with their family. This weeks Ask Roger Question is: “How do I survive Thanksgiving when my family is so politically divided?”

If you are like me, you probably have family and friends who voted differently than you. And, they are as passionate as you are. The stress of the holiday, the emotions of family history and now this election can easily destroy a family gathering. It does not have to be this way.

Remember, Thanksgiving is about giving thanks for the abundance in your life. I urge you to use your self-hypnosis and all of your mindfulness based stress reduction tools and remember to breathe.

Stay focused on your love for your family. Lift each other up and let love prevail.

Happy Thanksgiving

You can make this a Happy Thanksgiving. Stop thinking about surviving Thanksgiving and focus on being happy and loving.

Here are some tips to truly make this a Happy Thanksgiving:

  • Make the entire day a Politically Free day. If you need to, post a sign on your door “No Politics Zone”.
  • If someone starts talking about politics, politely stop them and ask them (again) to name 3 things for which they are grateful.
  • If you choose to allow political conversation, listen to the person. Do not argue. Acknowledge what they have said. You don’t have to agree. Do not try to change their mind (as if that has ever worked).
  • No nasty name calling.
  • Be nice to each other. Let people know how much you love and appreciate them. Compliment them.
  • Lift each other up.

Ask Roger: Surviving Thanksgiving with a politically divided family

“I’ve been telling people to look beyond survivor ship and keeping Peter Yarrow’s song in mind, lift each other up. Focus on your love for each other and on your shared history. Focus on the abundance that you have, and give thanks. Express your gratitude for the life you have been given.

You can even make agreements ahead time that there are no political conversations at Thanksgiving. After all, the election is all we have heard about for the past 18 months.

If someone does make a comment about the election, let them know that you heard them and then change the subject. Have courage and lift them up. Let love prevail.

Give thanks for your family, even if they voted for the other person.”

Lift Us Up

by Peter Yarrow

Lift us up
Make our stand
Let love triumph
In our land

Lift us up
Make us strong
Give us courage
To right the wrong

America our hopes and dreams
Are truly all at stake
Let not the hate divide us
Let not our spirit break

Let not our courage falter
Let not our bravery fail
Let unity bring victory
Let love prevail

Be sure to keep your family laughing and loving this Thanksgiving!
