Maude had released 25 pounds and had another 20 to go. She plateaued for about a month and then realized that she feared if she allowed herself to reach her ideal weight, she could never be a slacker again. If she slacked off and didn’t try to get to her goal, then it wouldn’t be a failure. Her real fear was that if she tried to get to her goal, she might not succeed, or if she reached her goal, perhaps she wouldn’t be able to maintain her ideal weight. She also acknowledged that letting go of the first 25 pounds had been too easy and that she didn’t think it really counted. She was in slacker trance. Consciously, she knew she wanted to reach her ideal weight; unconsciously, she was stopped by her thoughts-her fears.
