Benefits of a Low-Fat Vegan Diet for MSIf you have multiple sclerosis (MS), some experts believe a low-fat vegan diet could boost your energy and help your overall health. A randomized controlled study of this topic was presented at the 2014 American Academy of Neurology annual meeting. It followed 61 participants with MS for a year — about half followed a low-fat vegan plan called the McDougall diet, which consists of fruits, vegetables, starches, and very low levels of saturated fat and no meat, fish, or dairy products. The diet is promoted by John McDougall, MD, founder of the McDougall Program in Santa Rosa, Calif. Among study participants,about 50% of the participants had a decrease in fatigue and the average weight loss in the study was 16 pounds. The average overall cholesterol reading decreased by 16 points and low density lipoprotein cholesterol, also known as LDL, or “bad” cholesterol, decreased by 12 points. Those following the McDougall diet in the study scored their quality of life and overall mood as higher than those who did not follow it. CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated safety and achievable compliance of this diet. Small sample size, use of disease modifying therapies by many subjects, and one-year follow up likely contributed to the reduced power to detect changes on MRI and clinical outcomes. Improved lipid profile and weight may yield longer term vascular health benefits. Longer future studies with larger sample size are needed.
