Breakfast Like a King
If you want to lose weight, eat breakfast Like a king, lunch Like a prince, dinner Like a pauper. Or, as I’ve said for the past 23 years, you want the bulk of your food earlier in the day and less food later in the day.
This is pretty much opposite of how most Americans are eating. What I hear in my office is that most of the daily calories are consumed after 5:00 PM. And, so many people tell me they skip breakfast and or lunch and then have one big several-hour-long meal that lasts until bedtime.
When I weighed 260 pounds I often skipped breakfast. But for the past 25 years, almost every morning has started with a bowl of oatmeal. I’m a big believer in the importance of breakfast.
If you skip breakfast and are consuming most of your calories later in the day, these videos from Dr Michael Greger is definitely worth your viewing.

Michael Greger M.D. FACLM, January 27th, 2020 Volume 49: ‘“Stories about food and nutrition are in the news on an almost daily basis, but information can sometimes be confusing and contradictory. Clear messages should be proposed in order to reach the greatest number of people,” the researchers conclude. And one clear communication physicians could give is “If you want to lose weight, eat more in the morning than in the evening.’
Even just telling people to eat their main meal at lunch rather than dinner may help. Despite comparable calorie intakes, participants in a weight loss program randomized to get advice to make their main meal lunch, beat out those who instead were told to make their main meal dinner.”
Michael Greger M.D. FACLM, January 29th, 2020 Volume 49: “Why are calories eaten in the morning apparently less fattening than calories eaten in the evening? One reason is that more calories are burned off in the morning due to diet-induced thermogenesis. That’s the amount of energy the body takes to digest and process a meal, given off in part as waste heat. If you take people and give them the exact same meal in the morning, afternoon, and night, their body uses up about 25 percent more calories to process it in the afternoon than night, and about 50 percent more calories to digest it in the morning. That leaves fewer net calories in the morning to be stored as fat.”
