Wrigley is stirring up controversy with its new caffeinated gum, Alert Energy. The “energy” comes in the form of caffeine, and each piece of gum has the equivalent of half a cup of coffee. Alert Energy Caffeine Gum is for adults who are looking for foods with caffeine for energy and contains 40mg a piece, about half a cup of coffee,” said Wrigley in a statement. One major and important concern is that kids will be using caffeinated gum as well. Are you really OK with this? I’m not. I really do think that we have a moral responsibility to protect our children from processed foods filled with chemicals.

Caffeinated gum prompts
an FDA investigation

The Boston Globe, May 6, 2013: Wrigley launched a caffeinated gum last week called Alert Energy, adding to the numerous foods and beverages now containing added caffeine for “energy.” And the US Food and Drug Administration announced that it is responding with an investigation.

The agency “is taking a fresh look at the potential impact that the totality of new and easy sources of caffeine may have on the health of children and adolescents, and if necessary, will take appropriate action,” Michael Taylor, FDA deputy commissioner, said in a statement. “The only time that the FDA explicitly approved the added use of caffeine in a food was for cola and that was in the 1950s.”

The Real Reason to Stay Away from
Wrigley’s New Caffeinated Gum

Fooducate, May 1, 2013: According to the FDA,  the proliferation of caffeine added to foods is beyond anything the agency ever envisioned. Indeed, caffeine has found its way into more products over the years, more notably the fastest growing beverage category – energy drinks. These are a favorite among teens and younger; their ad campaigns are certainly targeting that demographic.

Stay away from this gum because of all the other crap it has:

SORBITOL MALTITOL, GUM BASE, GLYCEROL, CAFFEINE LESS THAN 2% OF: NATURAL AND ARTIFICIAL FLAVORS, ACACIA, SOY LECITHIN, MALIC ACID, ASPARTAME, COLORS (TITANIUM DIOXIDE, BLUE 2 LAKE, RED 40 LAKE), SUCRALOSE, ASPARTAME-ACESULFAME, CITRIC ACID, ACESULFAME K, CONFECTIONER’S GLAZE, BHT (TO MAINTAIN FRESHNESS), CARNAUBA WAX.PHENYLKETONURICS: CONTAINS PHENYLALANINE.

Did you notice the 4 different artificial sweeteners? Or the 3 different artificial colors?

Teens and younger children are consuming the proliferation of caffeinated products and to me this is alarming. I believe that as adults we have a responsibility to the younger generation to protect them and see that they have healthy food and a healthy environment. As a nation we simply cannot afford the health care costs caused by the processed food that is available today. We must reform health care and I truly believe that healthcare reform begins with each of us taking personal responsibility for our own health and the healthy of our family. You have the power of voting with your wallet. Be responsible and don’t buy processed foods filled with additives. Please educate your children on the dangers of processed food.
