Hypnosis for cancer is being commonly utilized in cancer centers and by people living with cancer throughout the world. In February, 2015, it was reported that surgeons at the Institut Curie in Paris have carried out more than 70 cancer operations in the preceding months – using no more than a local anesthetic and hypnosis. Hypnosis has been offered at the hospital for several months for patients who do not want to undergo general anesthetic. Many have been mastectomies, where the operation can last more than an hour, but others have been shorter procedures. Studies show that cognitive-behavioral therapy plus hypnosis can control fatigue in patients undergoing radiotherapy for breast cancer. Hypnosis is noninvasive, has no adverse effects, and its beneficial effects persist long after the last intervention session.
As a Healthcare Support Hypnotherapist, I have been teaching medical hypnosis to people living with cancer for the past 15 years in Seattle, Bainbridge Island and worldwide online. I lead a monthly group at Peninsula Cancer Center in Poulsbo, WA., and I have been active with Gilda’s Club and other cancer support groups throughout Puget Sound.
Hypnosis for Cancer Recovery
Studies are showing that hypnosis is a powerful and effective tool in dealing with the physical symptoms of cancer as well as decreasing need for anesthesia during surgery, alleviating pain, nausea, fatigue and emotional distress. Hypnosis is also used to modify the course of the disease process itself through the use of imagery. Studies show that during surgery, that hypnotized women required 22% less analgesia and 34% less sedation. After surgery, they reported 53% less pain intensity, 46% less fatigue, 47% less discomfort, and 74% less emotional upset. They also spent 11 fewer minutes in surgery, resulting in a cost savings of almost $800.00 per patient. ~Journal of the National Cancer Institute.
