I selected Other challenges you may face as this weeks reading after a conversation this week with one a young woman who had visited her family in another state. While her Mom and Dad were supportive, her overweight sisters were cruel with their remarks. This was her first trip to visit her family since she began weight loss hypnosis with Slender For Life™ and lost 50 pounds. As she shared her experience, she acknowledged that her sisters were threatened by her weight loss and lifestyle changes. Her weight loss success was forcing them to look at their own behaviors. Other challenges you may face is this weeks reading from Becoming Slender For Life.
Other challenges you may face
For some people, especially those who live in places where being a vegetarian is still viewed as something akin to being a communist or at best a kook, the psychological aspects of living a different lifestyle can cause feelings of isolation and disconnectedness from family and friends. The snide comments about eating rabbit food grow stale really fast. Depending on who you are dealing with, you can either take a sincere, thoughtful approach or fight ignorance with wit.
Here’s how Dan deals with it. “I actually prefer to say I follow a vegan diet and lowimpact lifestyle, rather than just say I’m a vegan. I know its only reworded, but I think the subtle change can make a huge difference in how folks hear us and accept us. To me, following a vegan diet and low-impact lifestyle means I’m doing my best for what I believe in, rather than setting myself up for critical analysis and probing by stating I’m a vegan—which can sound a bit like I think I’m better than you.”
There are lots of vegetarian and vegan communities online where you can find support. One is www.veganoutreach.org. While I do not agree with 100 percent of the information on this website, it offers some great ideas. I am not looking for you to agree with me 100 percent. In fact, I ask all new clients to please read the information, listen to the CDs from a place of “Isn’t that interesting” rather than “I agree or disagree.” Take this information and use what works for you.
Another issue is dealing with people who may prefer you fat and NOT have a positive response to your success. If you missed the section on diet sabotage in Chapter Seven, be sure to see Page 213.

When family and friends are less than supportive of health and lifestyle changes that you are making, I think that it’s best to not engage in conversations about these changes. Don’t try to convince them or win them over. If someone is trying to convince you that what you are doing is wrong, change the subject and end the conversation. Your actions and the results of your weight loss will speak louder than your words.
Of course weight loss hypnosis can help you be calm, centered and navigate your way through encounters with family and friends. At Slender For Life™ I help you overcome feelings of isolation and disconnectedness from family and friends empowering you to be true to your self and to your health.
