I have been quoting from a great article by the Mayo Clinic that says that when it comes to childhood obesity it’s important to be flexible. “It’ll take time to get used to your healthier habits. Encourage everyone to stick to the plan — but if the goals aren’t working for your family, consider making adjustments. It’s better to create a new plan than to stick to one that isn’t working.”
Being flexible is so important with children and with ourselves. Trying to “diet” rigidly is a total setup for failure. There is no way to diet perfectly. But, what you can do, is model responsible healthy eating. Load your plate with veggies and whole grains – but stop eating your your body tells you enough. Leave food on your plate. Eat slowly, consciously and mindfully. Get out and exercise. When eating out, take your kids to someplace that has healthy food choices – don’t do the drive though burger, fries and shake.
