Bob Condor of the Seattle PI had another great Living Well article on August 12, 2008, Cholesterol drugs for kids? Are they serious? He writes:

In July the American Academy of Pediatrics, the most influential children’s medicine organization in the country, made news by announcing that it now recommends that cholesterol drugs are appropriate for kids 8 years and older.

I have two words for that announcement: unsettling, unfathomable.

I had a few other adjectives that came to mind as well, but I’ll leave it as “unsettling, unfathomable.” Much of the medical community has given up on prevention of obesity and gone straight for the drugs that will work with the diseases that result from obesity.

Yes, too many American children are building up damage too early in life and yes we need to be more aggressive about preventing heart attacks and strokes – but drugs?!  What are we thinking?

Let’s get aggressive and get our kids away from the TV and video games and get them outside playing ball and riding their bikes.
