Weight-loss clients get discouraged easily when they reach a plateau or set point. They also get discouraged when after several months of successful effort, they slip, cheat or fall onto the chuck wagon. Their old diet mentality sneaks up, along with the belief that it’s a failure to have had some Cheetos.
I remind clients that change is a cyclical process and that part of the learning and healing process is to revisit issues.
I am sometimes surprised when after two or three sessions, I hear a client talking like they should have all their old eating habits behind them. That after two or three sessions they expect to have changed a lifetime of mental and emotional relationships with food. I pull out their Recommended Program Plan and show them that we have months to work together at resolving these issues. Our goal at Slender For Life™ is to stay with clients throughout the entire process of obtaining their ideal weight. For some, it’s three or four months. For others, that can be two or more years. I believe that this is worth repeating: I can send smoking cessation clients out the door after one session and have them be smoke-free for the rest of their lives. But those of us with food issues do not have the luxury of never eating again. We will forever be dealing with the tastes and smells of food—with the social, cultural, religious, holiday and physical needs for food. Being slender for life is a life-long journey.
I urge you to view your new lifestyle as a journey and to continue exploring and learning more about yourself. From my perspective, we are all on a physical, mental, emotional and spiritual journey.
