With my Seattle hypnosis and Bainbridge Island hypnosis weekly posts on the dangers of energy drinks it should be no surprise to you that hospitalizations are on the rise. The Food and Drug Administration is investigating reports that caffeinated energy drinks, including the popular Monster brand, potentially killed five people. Testing has found that many popular brands contain caffeine at levels higher than what’s listed on the cans, but it’s the other ingredients that concern researchers, too. Death is the worst side effect linked to energy drinks and shots, but there’s a laundry list of other health problems that could send an energy drink enthusiast to the hospital, too. Energy drinks contain a variety of other substances, including sugar or sweeteners, amino acids, vitamins, and an assortment of poorly researched herbal extracts. The good news is that there are healthy alternatives to sports drinks that provide the healthy energy boost you may need.

Every morning before heading to the gym for spin class or to pump iron or attend yoga, I grab a handful of raisins. Raisins give me the energy boost that I need to burn 500 calories in spin class and the strength I need to bench press or do downward dog. Sunday, weather permitting, I plan to ride the Daffodil Classic bike ride (100 miles). I will eat my oatmeal at about 4:30 AM and be eating raisins and bananas as I drive to Orting. On the ride I will be drinking lots of water, carrying a baggie of raisins in my pocket and stopping at each rest stop (about every 20 miles) to eat banana, orange and/or potato. I have fueled my body this way on previous century rides and have had the energy, stamina and strength that I need. (This is also how I fueled my body in the 5 marathons that I ran.)
And, of course I use self hypnosis for sports performance before, during and after the ride to keep focused, energized and relaxed. I even use hypnosis to keep my butt comfortable on the bike saddle for several hours. (Read Pain Management for Sports Performance.)
