The plant kingdom provides excellent sources of the nutrients once only associated with meat and dairy products—namely, protein and calcium. The Power Plate is a no-cholesterol, low-fat plan that supplies all of an average adult’s daily nutritional requirements,including substantial amounts of fiber. In 2011, the USDA revised its recommendations with MyPlate, a plan that reduces the prominence of animal products and vegetable fats. But because regular consumption of such foods—even in lower quantities—poses serious health risks.

PCRM recommends instead the Power Plate, based on the New Four Food Groups. The major killers of Americans—heart disease, cancer, and stroke—have a dramatically lower incidence among people consuming primarily plant-based diets. Weight problems, a contributor to a host of health concerns, including diabetes, can also be brought under control by following the Power Plate recommendations.

This past week I was involved in a conversation about food and health with several men. One very large man had broken into a sweat having walked to the bathroom and back. He was breathing as if he had been running. He told us that he had diabetes and high blood pressure and that his MD wanted him to diet. When I suggested that he perhaps consider a lifestyle change rather than a diet and talked about a plant based lifestyle, he made it clear that he would never give up his steak and he’d never give up his cheese and ice cream. He said he didn’t want to do anything that made him feel deprived.

We talked about the deprivation of the physical challenges he faced being a dad to young children and having sex with his wife.
