Evidence-based Diet

In How Not to Die, Dr. Michael Greger writes that, “I don’t advocate for a vegetarian or a vegan diet, I advocate for an evidence-based diet.” I was eating my oatmeal of the ferry and reading this new book when that line jumped out of my phone at me. That one line practically had me dancing in the galley. I keep hearing from people who want to do the latest fad diet like Paleo or Whole 30 or some other crazy marketing ploy. When I ask them to show me the science that supports that diet, they can’t find it. When I ask if they are aware of the health consequences of these plans, they’ve never considered it.

Since 1990, my Slender For Life™ weight loss hypnosis has supported hundreds of people with living a healthy evidence-based whole food plant-based lifestyle. Hypnosis for weight loss can help you to end your cravings for the foods that make you sick and fat and help you to create healthy desires for foods that make you healthy and slender.

How not to Die

That one unifying diet found to best prevent and treat many of these chronic diseases is a whole-food, plant-based diet, defined as an eating pattern that encourages the consumption of unrefined plant foods and discourages meats, dairy products, eggs, and processed foods.

In this book, I don’t advocate for a vegetarian diet or a vegan diet. I advocate for an evidence-based diet, and the best available balance of science suggests that the more whole plant foods we eat, the better— both to reap their nutritional benefits and to displace less healthful options.

Most doctor visits are for lifestyle-based diseases, which means they’re preventable diseases. As physicians, my colleagues and I were trained not to treat the root cause but rather the consequences by giving a lifetime’s worth of medications to treat risk factors like high blood pressure, blood sugar, and cholesterol. This approach has been compared to mopping up the floor around an overflowing sink instead of simply turning off the faucet. Drug companies are more than happy to sell you a new roll of paper towels every day for the rest of your life while the water continues to gush.

Purchase How Not To Die

When I started reading How Not To Die, I couldn’t put it down. It’s that good. I’ve recommend Dr. Greger’s book to several clients and other professionals. And, it will be on the reading list for a class that I am teaching in May at the International Medical and Dental Hypnotherapy Association (IMDHA) annual conference. Again, IT’S THAT GOOD! The simple truth is that most doctors are good at treating acute illnesses but bad at preventing chronic disease. The fifteen leading causes of death claim the lives of 1.6 million Americans annually. This doesn’t have to be the case. By following Dr. Greger’s advice, all of it backed up by strong scientific evidence, you will learn which foods to eat and which lifestyle changes to make to live longer.

In addition to showing what to eat to help treat the top fifteen causes of death, How Not to Die includes Dr. Greger’s Daily Dozen -a checklist of the twelve foods we should consume every day. Full of practical, actionable advice and surprising, cutting edge nutritional science, these doctor’s orders are just what we need to live longer, healthier lives.
