These same people tell me that once they get moving, they feel better, have more energy, are in a better mood and actually enjoy it. It’s the getting started that is so difficult. I’ve written on several occasions that I don’t really enjoy going to the gym, but I do love the fact that last Saturday I was able to go on a more than 14 mile hike with an elevation gain of 4,000 feet. I love the fact that I can jump on my bike today and go for a 100 mile bike ride and not have to “train” – I’m ready to go. To me, exercise is about creating liberty in my life. I can go do what I want to do when I want to do it! As a grandfather of 5, that means a lot to me – and it sure helps to with having the energy to keep up with the two young one! Getting started

Along with developing a habit for a daily exercise routine, increase your physical activity whenever you can. Walk instead of drive. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Park your car farther away from entrances so that you walk farther. Dance around the kitchen while you cook. Get your dog up off the couch too!

Begin your exercise at the level you are at now. Exercise aerobically everyday; if walking to your mailbox is a stretch for you,then make that the goal. Gradually and carefully increase your exercise. If you are currently walking for 15 minutes and feel that you are ready to increase your exercise, then the next increment is 16 or 17 minutes. Do not jump from 15 to 30 minutes. There is no greater way to ruin your joy of exercising than injury. Do not over do it!

By accepting the hypnotic suggestions regarding your exercise, you begin to enjoy it so much that you make it a daily priority. Walking is an excellent form of exercise. If you’re just beginning to exercise, start out in short durations and build up to 30-45 minutes a day. But don’t go too fast. You want to walk fast enough that you get warm, slow enough that you can still talk or sing. This is the fat burning range. If you are going so fast that you can’t talk or sing, then it’s a great cardio workout and you get the “runner’s high” but you are not burning fat. Fat is the least efficient fuel that the body has to burn, and when your heart is working that hard you are not burning fat.
