If you are serious about wanting to exercise, then make it a good habit that you just don’t want to break. No matter how old you are, it’s never too late to start exercising. My 90 year-old Mom exercises by walking laps in her house or when she can get out, down the drive way or in the mall. Exercise can be dancing, swimming, riding a bike, going to the gym, playing Wii Fit or any of the multitude of body movement options. Set up a regular exercise schedule and stick to it. If it’s the gym, say “hello” to the people you regularly see. I have been working out most every morning for ten years with the same group of people. We don’t talk much, but we acknowledge each other, and we notice when someone is missing. I know the grief I will get from them the next day over sleeping in one morning isn’t worth staying in bed! I know that’s enough of a motivator to get me on my way.
And if you live alone, are new to an area, or are just a bit short on a social circle, making friends through a common love of activity is an added boon. This is especially important for seniors, who often become increasingly isolated as the years roll by. There are bound to be special exercise programs just for seniors in your area, so don’t let embarrassment about your age or lack of physical conditioning keep you at home in the rocking chair!
New research shows that just 30 minutes of daily exercise works just as well as an hour in helping overweight adults lose weight.
