Researchers say this anxiety relief is in addition to other proven general health and well-being benefits of regular exercise.

“Our findings add to the growing body of evidence that physical activities such as walking or weight lifting may turn out to be the best medicine that physicians can prescribe to help their patients feel less anxious,” researcher Matthew Herring, a doctoral student in the department of kinesiology at the University of Georgia, says in a news release. The participants in the studies suffered from a variety of chronic illnesses, including heart disease, multiple sclerosis, cancer, and arthritis.The results showed that people with chronic illnesses who exercised regularly reported about a 20% reduction in anxiety symptoms, compared to those who did not exercise.
