What’s Your Excuse?
To understand your resistance to exercise, start by listing all the excuses you’ve ever used to not do it—then go deeper and see what’s really going on. Then go back and write a way to counter each excuse. Here are some examples:
EXCUSE: I don’t have enough time to go to the gym.
UNDERLYING FEELING: I’m too busy as it is. This is not a priority for me. Why not? I tell myself that because I just don’t like exercising. The truth is, I haven’t made my own health a high priority.
COUNTER IDEA: I could buy a treadmill or other exercise equipment that I could use at home and even multi-task. Or, I could set my alarm an hour earlier three days a week and make time.
EXCUSE: I can’t afford a gym membership.
UNDERLYING FEELING: Why invest in something that won’t pay off? I’ll probably only go once in awhile. I don’t believe I’m worth the expense. I don’t value my health enough to make a financial sacrifice to do this. I’d like to change that thinking.
COUNTER IDEA: Walking is free, and one of the best all-around activities. I can even walk in the mall during bad weather—and I’ll be in good company there if I go early before the stores open. Or I can rent all kinds of workout videos from my library, which ought to give me some new ideas.
EXCUSE: It’s boring.
UNDERLYING FEELING: I’m afraid to go to a gym. I’m self-conscious about how I’d look there. I’m too busy to even think about what else I could do. That’s a lie. I’m too lazy to think of something else to do! What was boring was P.E. class in high school when I had no control. Now I can decide what kind of activity to do.
COUNTER IDEA: There are plenty of options that are not boring. I could take a ballroom dance class with my partner and go out dancing every Saturday night.

I hear so many reasons every day as to why there was no time this week to exercise. I acknowledge that there are days that life does get in the way. On those days, park your car further from the office door or further from the door at the grocery store and take the stairs instead of the elevator.
I have been going to the same gym for 16 years at 5:00 AM, Monday – Friday. I know most of the people that are there at that time and one of my motivators to get out of bed on a dark, cold, wet morning is that I get to see my friends. (And if I were to not go I’d face grilling as to why I was absent! It’s worth getting up to go to avoid that hassling!) But I’ll be honest: I don’t get a lot of joy from the exercises themselves – I do get tremendous joy from the activities I can do as a result. For me, exercise is all about the joy.
