Grace

I’ve been re-thinking about grace and falling from grace and what these words mean – especially in the context of the Greatest Expression of You.

I Googled the word grace and found several definitions. The one that I think is most reflective of the Greatest Expression is: “the quality or state of being considerate or thoughtful.”

  • Grace implies a benign attitude and courteous goodwill and it is a simple elegance or refinement of movement.
  • Divine grace is a theological term present in many religions to inspire virtuous impulses, and to impart strength to endure trial and resist temptation.

I’ve often referred to being your Best Self as a state of Grace. It’s a Beingness of love and joy. When being your Best Self you can move through life’s trials, acknowledge and deal with a situation, without getting sucked into it. After being hit by a car I had a fractured clavicle and my shoulder hurt. When I was being my Best Self, I could acknowledge the discomfort, use my hypnosis pain control tools to dial it back and get on with my life. In the times of being less than my Best Self, it was easy to move into the despair of pain.

Falling from grace

Falling from grace has been defined an idiom referring to a loss of status, respect, or prestige. I’ve struggled using this phrase as I do not want to suggest judging oneself as bad or less than and it’s not at all about beating yourself up.

For the purposes of the Greatest Expression of You, falling from grace is simply an acknowledgement of, “I am not being my Best Self right now.” This acknowledgment allows for a moment of pause – reflection and the opportunity of choice. The options are to continue in old ways of being that no longer serve you, or to take a deep breath, acknowledge the reality of “what is”, and the opportunity to step back into Being your Best Self.

As I have said many times, as long as you are human – as long as you have a pulse, you will fall from grace. You will have moments of Being less than your Best Self. That is the human experience. It is an opportunity to learn, to forgive, to grow and to love.

When you’ve fallen from grace, take a moment right then if you can, or at the end of the day during your Inventory, to Mentally Rehearse this situation only this time Being your Best Self. By doing so, you are creating new neuropathways to Be and to Do differently next time.
