I know it used to feel like I had food on the brain. Seems like all I thought about was food and food was most certainly my drug of choice. Like other obese individuals I continued to eat large amounts of unhealthy foods despite severe social and personal negative consequences, just like addicts or alcoholics. Just like drugs, after an initial period of “enjoyment” of the food, the user no longer consumes them to get high but to feel normal. Animals and humans experience “withdrawal” when suddenly cut off from sugar, just like addicts detoxifying from drugs. How did I overcome my addiction to food? HYPNOSIS. I had tried all the diets and failed miserably. Then, I used self hypnosis and changed what and how I was eating. I then added exercise – again thanks to hypnotherapy. Using hypnosis, I was able to break the cycle of addiction and lose weight. 17 years later I am Slender For Life™.
Is This Your Addiction?
Emerging science shows that the minds of overeaters may look like those of drug addicts.
The proof is in the neuroimaging scans at right, from Gene-Jack Wang, M.D., of the Brookhaven National Laboratory. When Dr. Wang’s team scanned the brains of obese over-eaters and meth addicts, they found that the people in both groups had fewer dopamine receptors available in their brains than healthy individuals (dopamine receptor availability is shown in red).
What’s the big deal? Just as meth users need more and more of the drug to get high, obese overeaters may need more and more food to produce the same intensity of dopamine “high”—a cycle that can reinforce addictive behavior, according to Dr. Wang.
