Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center find that gene expression is altered with the relaxation response which is attained through mindfulness practices like hypnosis, meditation, yoga, deep breathing, prayer and other practices. This change in gene expression produces immediate changes in the expression of genes involved in immune function, energy metabolism and insulin secretion. Relaxation Response Induces Temporal Transcriptome Changes in Energy Metabolism, Insulin Secretion and Inflammatory Pathways
Plos One, May 1, 2013: Our results for the first time indicate that RR elicitation, particularly after long-term practice, may evoke its downstream health benefits by improving mitochondrial energy production and utilization and thus promoting mitochondrial resiliency through upregulation of ATPase and insulin function. Mitochondrial resiliency might also be promoted by RR-induced downregulation of NF-?B-associated upstream and downstream targets that mitigates stress.
Pathways controlled by activation of a protein called NF-kB – known to have a prominent role in inflammation, stress, trauma and cancer – were suppressed after relaxation response elicitation. The expression of genes involved in insulin pathways was also significantly altered.
