Iowa State scientists found no difference in resting metabolic rates (RMRs) between the obese and lean women in their study group — confounding the conventional wisdom that blames higher weights on a slower metabolism. Instead, the biggest observable difference was that obese women sat for 2.5 more hours and spent half as much time in activity compared to lean women, all resulting in 315 fewer calories burned each day.
While standing up may be key to trimming down, other ways to max your metabolism include eating breakfast, lifting weights, and keeping hydrated. Even fidgeting can contribute to calorie expenditure. On the other hand, inactivity not only equates to excess pounds, it actually ages you on a cellular level.
