Unless you’re living under a rock, you probably know some one who professes to have gluten intolerance. I recently met a professional who talked non-stop about her health challenges and that she was gluten intolerant. As she talked, she let it slip out that she had a love for hard liquor (in excess). I also noticed that she made frequent trips outside. Thinking that it must be really nice out there, I walked out to join her only to discover that these trips into nature were to smoke cigarettes. While I am not a doctor and I don’t diagnose, I remain skeptical that gluten has anything to do with her health challenges.
The reality is that less than 1% of people really have a gluten intolerance. The marketers, food manufactures and fad diet authors are are making millions by promoting a cure to a almost non-existent illness. I’ve been saddened as I listen to people who are overweight talk about avoiding gluten and acknowledge that they’ve actually gained more weight in trying to do so.

Gluten-free Diets Are Harmful for the General Population (Except for one percent)
The current gluten-free diet craze is unhealthy for those who do not need it—those without celiac disease. In search of weight loss and/or feeling better, millions of Americans risk becoming sicker and fatter by increasing their intake of gluten-free products. Estimates are as high as 15 to 25 percent of consumers in the US want gluten-free food, with the global market of gluten-free products approaching $2.6 billion in 2010.
If you, like two-thirds of adults in the US, are sick and overweight, and of the vast majority whom are also without celiac disease, wheat allergy or wheat sensitivity, then I strongly recommend that you include these good starches—wheat, barley and rye—in your diet because these foods are known to cause desirable weight loss and medical benefits.
In my post Gluten sensitivity: Fact or fad, I quote Dr. Michael Greger who says that. “The reason health professionals don’t want to see people on gluten-free diets unless absolutely necessary is that for the 98% of people that don’t have gluten issues. Whole grains—including the gluten grains wheat, barley and rye—are health promoting, linked to the reduced risk of coronary heart disease, cancer, diabetes, obesity and other chronic diseases.
Just like because some people have a peanut allergy, doesn’t mean everyone should avoid peanuts. There is no evidence to suggest that following a gluten-free diet has any significant benefits in the general population. Indeed, there is some evidence to suggest that a gluten-free diet may adversely affect gut health in those without celiac disease or gluten sensitivity or allergy.” Read Gluten sensitivity: Fact or fad.
You don’t have to be overweight to benefit from hypnosis. The woman that I met this past weekend described herself as being very health conscious (the one that said she was a heavy drinker and smoked every opportunity she had) is slender. Hypnosis can help her to stop smoking and stop abusing alcohol. Over the last 19 years I have taught self-hypnosis to numerous people living with celiac disease. In every instance, they were able to improve their health and some became symptom free using the medical hypnosis skills that I taught them.
