Healthy heart dietThe evidence is clear that a healthy heart diet is a plant based (starch based) diet. Kim A. Williams, MD, incoming president of the American College of Cardiology, posted a blog describing why he’s now consuming a plant based diet. After a week, it was still the no. 1 most-read cardiovascular article on MedPage Today. Since 1990, Slender For Life™ hypnosis for weight loss has helped hundreds of people make the change to a healthy heart plant based diet. If you are ready to improve your health, I can support you too.

CardioBuzz: Vegan Diet, Healthy Heart?

Medpage Today, Kim A. Williams, MD, July 21, 2014: I thought I had a healthy diet — no red meat, no fried foods, little dairy, just chicken breast and fish. But a simple Web search informed me that my chicken-breast meals had more cholesterol content (84 mg/100 g) than pork (62 mg/100 g). So I changed that day to a cholesterol-free diet, using “meat substitutes” commonly available in stores and restaurants for protein. Within 6 weeks my LDL cholesterol level was down to 90.

I often discuss the benefits of adopting a plant-based diet with patients who have high cholesterol, diabetes, hypertension, or coronary artery disease. I encourage these patients to go to the grocery store and sample different plant-based versions of many of the basic foods they eat. For me, some of the items, such as chicken and egg substitutes, were actually better-tasting.

Wouldn’t it be a laudable goal of the American College of Cardiology to put ourselves out of business within a generation or two? We have come a long way in prevention of cardiovascular disease, but we still have a long way to go. Improving our lifestyles with improved diet and exercise will help us get there

CardioBuzz: ‘Lifestyle Medicine’

Medpage Today, Dean Ornish, July 31, 2014: The most influential trend in medicine today, growing exponentially, is the emerging field of what is known as “lifestyle medicine” — lifestyle as treatment, not just prevention.

We tend to think of advances in medicine as a new drug, laser, or surgical device, something high-tech and expensive. Yet, the simple choices we make in what we eat and how we live have a powerful influence on our health and well-being.

For the past 37 years, my colleagues and I at the nonprofit Preventive Medicine Research Institute and the University of California San Francisco School of Medicine, in collaboration with leading academic centers, have conducted a series of randomized, controlled trials and demonstration projects showing that comprehensive lifestyle changes alone often can reverse the progression of coronary heart disease and several other chronic diseases.

These lifestyle changes include:

  • A whole foods, plant-based diet (naturally low in fat and sugar)
  • stress management techniques (including yoga and meditation)
  • Moderate exercise (such as walking)
  • Social support and community (love and intimacy)

Changing lifestyle changes your genes — we found that these comprehensive lifestyle changes caused beneficial changes in expression of 501 genes in just 3 months. Downregulated genes included those promoting inflammation, oxidative stress, and the RAS oncogenes that promote breast cancer, prostate cancer, and colon cancer.

Often, patients say, “Oh, I’ve just got bad genes, there’s nothing I can do about it.” However, when they learn that changing lifestyle may beneficially change gene expression in so many genes so quickly, it can be very motivating. Not to blame, but to empower.
