Finding real food at the supermarket once you are beyond the produce section can be challenging. I was excited this weekend when I came across Darya Pino’s website Summer Tomato and her great flowchart. In my Bainbridge Island weight loss and Seattle weight loss offices of Slender For Life™ we frequently discuss the definition of real food. Hypnosis weight loss clients tell me that thanks to self-hypnosis, they easily give up junk food, fast food and processed foods. It is exciting when I hear weight loss hypnosis clients tell me that they are enjoying a variety of vegetables, whole grains and fruit.
Here is Darya Pino’s blog post for January 5, 2011:
Grocery shopping has never been more confusing than it is in 2011.
With conflicting nutrition information coming at us from all sides, navigating the supermarket can feel as impossible as doing long division while juggling loaded bear traps. It’s neither fun nor safe.
To help you find real food within the endless labyrinth of junk, I’ve put together this handy flowchart for your use and amusement. Consider it your supermarket GPS. If you ever get lost, just start back at the top.

Might I be so bold as to suggest : If at all possible skip the Supermarket entirely. Instead, find a CSA or Food Co-op, go to farmers markets, or buy directly from local farmers/ranchers who are growing organically (whether certified or not). (I include in this buffalo meat which is better than cow beef in many ways). Best of all, grow your own produce and herbs (dare I say chickens?) in your own back or front yard. Geese and ducks will take care of weeds and bugs and are great burglar alarms. Tired of mowing the lawn? Get rid of it and turn that space into a garden that will feed the whole neighborhood.
In doing so we support our health and local growers/economy at the same time – and since gardening is good exercise you lose weight at the same time! What could be better? You can usually find these resources on line. If you don’t have a local Food Co-op, CSA, or U-Pick, start one and share with your neighbors and friends. For your fish, go fishing and enjoy the exercise and stress reducing benefits as well as a good meal.
Thanks Beth. You are right on with the produce. We get as much of our produce as we can from local growers and the farmers market. At this time of year (and living on an Island) our grocery store’s organic produce section is our only option. We lost some trees last spring and this year we will see if we have enough sunlight to grow some veggies.
