This cereal commercial gave me a good laugh. It’s attempt at a hypnosis demonstration is certainly Hollywood. Watching this commercial reminded me of a couple questions that people often ask: “How do I know if I was hypnotized?” and “What does hypnosis feel like?”
If you ask 100 hypnotherapists for the definition of hypnosis, you will get 100 different answers. Some like to discuss the definition ad nauseam. I quickly bore with that conversation and tend to think that what really matters most is the client’s experience.
Having said that, I do often have to explain what hypnosis is and isn’t. I tell all my clients and students that we are always in trance and that hypnosis is learning to take control of the trance that you are in.
People often confuse hypnosis with relaxation. You don’t have to be deeply relaxed to achieve life changing results. A light state of trance and be as effective as a deep state of trance – it’s just not as much fun. The more relaxed you are, the better it feels. But a deep state of relaxation is not necessarily more effective than a light trance.
Think of it this way: You get in your car and drive to the grocery store. You are in driving trance and you arrive safely at the store – yet you probably weren’t aware of every time you stepped on the break or turned on your turn signal.
And then there is elevator trance. The door opens and you get off on the wrong floor. Were you deeply relaxed then?
TV commercials count on you being in trance. The
marketers choose shows that beat you up and bring you down and then hit you with the happy “buy me and you’ll feel better” car or fast food commercial.
This obviously works or they couldn’t afford the mega bucks for the TV time. Are you in a deep state of trance when you get out of your recliner and head to the kitchen for that bowl of ice cream while thinking about that new car?
Want to know what hypnosis feels like? Close your eyes. That is what hypnosis feels like.
