Hypnosis for GERD
Hypnosis for GERD has shown to be effective alternative treatment for people suffering with one of the most common disorders of the digestive tract.
The two most typical symptoms of Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) are heartburn and regurgitation of stomach contents up into the back of the throat. In addition to the burning pain and a sour taste in your mouth, it causes millions of doctor visits every year and millions of hospitalizations. The most feared complication is cancer.
Over the past 20 years, several people each year have come to me for hypnosis for GERD, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). There is growing evidence that symptoms of brain-gut dysregulation are improved with hypnosis.
Hypnosis is also used for making lasting dietary lifestyle changes that support a healthy digestive system.

Medscape, Laurie Keefer, PhD, August 14, 2017: “… the use of hypnotherapy can be an effective alternative treatment for patients, one that is backed by scientific evidence and is now being offered at medical centers and via telemedicine throughout the United States.
When treating patients with brain-gut therapies, I think it helps them to know that while we’re working on the brain, we’re also taking into account input from the gut.”

Researchers found that those eating meat had twice the odds of reflux-induced esophageal inflammation. Therefore, vegetarian diets may offer protection, though it’s uncertain whether it’s attributable to the absence of meat in the diet, or the increased consumption of healthy foods. Vegetarian diets are characterized by greater consumption of fruits and vegetables containing innumerable phytochemicals, dietary fiber, and antioxidants than omnivores, in addition to just restricting their consumption of animal sources of food, which tend to be fattier, and then can relax that sphincter and aggravate reflux.”
The McDougall Newsletter, John McDougall, M.D., February 2002:
“Ten Actions To Take To Quench the Fire
- Consume a plant-based diet, low in fat and high in fiber
- Avoid foods which aggravate the indigestion, such as raw onions, green peppers, cucumbers, radishes, and fruit juices, and hot spices
- Eat small meals frequently – Do not over-distend your stomach
- Lose weight if you are obese, and wear loose clothing
- Give up regular and decaffeinated coffee
- Whenever possible avoid medications which lower LES
- Raise the head of the bed four to six inches (extra pillows will not help – they only bend you at the middle)
- Avoid lying down within three hours of eating
- Stop cigarettes and alcohol
- Take antacid medications as a last resort.”
