Last Thursday on vacation on Salt Spring Island I decided to check the news as I cooked my oatmeal. Wouldn’t you know that the bit of news that I heard on the Today Show was about Jessica Simpson and her weight loss battle. Evidently, Jessica Simpson is now a Weight Watchers spokesperson. Over the years many of my Seattle weight loss hypnosis clients have begun their Slender For Life™ journey while still involved with Weight Watchers.

The part of the story that particularly caught my attention was “I wanted to be happy and eat what I wanted.” WOW, I thought. That is so sad. While I can still remember the days of eating to be happy, it is a sad commentary on our society that an expectant mom would expose the baby in her womb to processed foods like Mac & Cheese and increase the risk that her child will have preventable diseases like diabetes that result from obesity.

ABC News, September 5, 2012: During pregnancy, Simpson was “constantly hungry” and had a “big appetite.” Her go-to indulgence was macaroni and cheese.

“I let myself indulge in everything I wanted because it was the first time I was ever pregnant, and I wanted to enjoy it,” the singer turned fashion designer said. “I wanted to be happy and eat what I wanted.”

Food can be fun, taste exquisite, look beautiful and be healthy. On vacation we ate fresh local produce like green beans, lettuce, tomatoes, new potatoes, peaches, corn and wood fired hearty breads as only the Canadians can make. We had fun at the markets purchasing the produce. We had fun preparing our meals and grilling our vegetables. We had fun eating amazing meals that exploded our taste buds. We had fun eating on the deck over the water as the sun set over Vancouver Island.

I ate a lot on this trip (I was more active). I drank beer and/or wine every night (typically I might have a beer a week). During the nine days of our trip we ate out for 5 meals and when we returned home, I weighed exactly the same as when we left. You can have fun enjoying amazing food without gaining weight.
